Punjab FC Academy Talent Fuels India's Commanding Win Over Pakistan in SAFF U-20 Championship

In a thrilling display of youth football prowess, the India Under-20 men's football team delivered a resounding 3-0 victory over Pakistan in the SAFF U-20 Championship held in Maldives. The match, played at the National Football Stadium in Male, saw the Blue Colts not only secure their place in the semifinals but also eliminate Pakistan from the tournament, marking a significant achievement in regional football.

Early Dominance Sets the Tone

The Indian squad started with explosive energy, with Punjab FC Academy players immediately making their mark. In just the third minute, Gurnaj Singh showcased exceptional vision by delivering a perfectly weighted through ball into the box. Vishal Yadav, the third youngest player to debut in the Indian Super League for Punjab FC, controlled the aerial pass under intense pressure and calmly slotted it past the Pakistan goalkeeper at the near post, giving India an early 1-0 lead.

Despite Pakistan creating several opportunities to equalize in the first half, the Indian defence, led by goalkeeper Suraj Aheibam, stood firm with crucial saves to maintain a clean sheet, showcasing their resilience and tactical discipline.

Omang Dodum's Spectacular Brace Seals the Deal

The second half was dominated by Omang Dodum, who emerged as the hero of the match with a spectacular brace, earning him the well-deserved Player of the Match award. Dodum, the only returning member from India's previous SAFF title-winning squad, continued his impressive attacking form from last year.

In the 64th minute, Dodum doubled India's lead by timing his run to perfection and heading home a brilliant first-time effort off a crossfield diagonal pass from substitute Rishi. He then capped off a stellar performance in the dying minutes of the game. After teammate Prashan Jajo was brought down inside the box in the 84th minute, Dodum confidently converted the resulting penalty into the top corner in the 88th minute, sealing the 3-0 victory.

Punjab FC Academy's Core Contribution

This victory highlighted the strength of Punjab FC's youth system, as all three goals were scored by academy players. Beyond the goal scorers, the Indian U-20 squad includes four more players from the Punjab FC academy: Karish Soram, Usham Singh Thoungamba, Rishikanta Meitei Laishram, and Aniket Yadav. This six-member contingent formed the core of the Punjab FC squad that recently won the AIFF U-17 Youth League, underscoring the club's reputation for developing top-tier football talent.

With this commanding win, India comfortably advanced to the knockout stages of the SAFF U-20 Championship. The Blue Colts are set to face Bangladesh on March 28 to conclude their group-stage campaign, aiming to build on this momentum for further success in the tournament.
