FC Goa's Iker Guarrotxena Joins Indonesian Club Amid ISL Uncertainty
Iker Guarrotxena Leaves India for Indonesia Super League

Iker Guarrotxena Exits FC Goa for Indonesian Opportunity

Spanish forward Iker Guarrotxena has become the latest footballer to leave India. He will now take up a new assignment in the Indonesia Super League. The FC Goa midfielder made this move due to ongoing uncertainty surrounding the top-tier Indian Super League.

Uncertainty in Indian Football League

The All India Football Federation announced that the ISL will kick off on February 14. All fourteen teams are expected to participate. However, several clubs including FC Goa have not yet resumed first team operations. This situation created doubts among players about the upcoming season.

Players faced additional challenges. They were asked to accept pay cuts to help clubs minimize losses. The upcoming season will be truncated with no central revenue and possibly no sponsorships. These factors contributed to Guarrotxena's decision to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Emotional Farewell from Guarrotxena

Guarrotxena expressed his feelings in a social media post on Wednesday. He wrote, "Goa, I love you so much. India, you've been amazing. You'll always be a part of my heart. My family and I are eternally grateful for all the happiness you gave us." The emotional message highlighted his connection to the region.

The Spanish footballer has an impressive record in India. He won the ISL Trophy with Mumbai City FC in 2024. After returning to Goa, he secured two Super Cup titles under coach Manolo Marquez. His contributions made him a valuable player for his teams.

New Team and Familiar Faces

Guarrotxena will join Persijap Jepara in Indonesia. He will team up with former Goa player Borja Herrera and ex-Mumbai City defender Tiri at the club. Persijap Jepara has former Forca Kochi coach Mario Lemos serving as technical director. This reunion of familiar faces may ease his transition.

FC Goa released an official statement about his departure. The club said, "A true fighter on the pitch, we thank Iker for his dedication and fighting spirit towards the badge. Good Luck for your next challenge Iker." The statement acknowledged his commitment to the team.

Growing Trend of Foreign Players Leaving

Guarrotxena represents the fourth foreign player to leave FC Goa recently. He follows Borja who moved to Indonesia, Javier Siverio who joined a Cypriot club, and David Timor who returned to Spain. Sources indicate Serbian winger Dejan Drazic is also considering available options and may mutually part ways with the club.

Other Indian clubs are experiencing similar departures. Kerala Blasters announced that defender Juan Rodriguez has mutually agreed to leave. Rodriguez will pursue a new challenge closer to home in Spain with Marbella FC. Mumbai City confirmed that midfielder Jon Toral has also mutually parted ways with the club.

The exodus of foreign talent raises questions about the current state of Indian football. Players seem to be seeking more stable opportunities abroad. The ISL faces challenges in retaining international players amid financial and operational uncertainties.
