Folarin Balogun etched his name in USMNT history by becoming the first American player to score in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. The 22-year-old striker netted for AS Monaco in their 3-1 aggregate victory over a top European side, advancing to the quarterfinals.
Historic Achievement
Balogun's goal came in the second leg of the round of 32 (now referred to as Round of 16 under the new format), making him the first USMNT player to score at this stage of the competition. According to official UEFA records, no American had previously scored in the Round of 16 since the tournament's restructuring.
"It's a dream come true. I've worked hard to get here, and to help my team win is special," Balogun said after the match.
Impact on US Soccer
This milestone highlights the growing influence of American players in European football. Balogun, who also scored in the group stage, has now netted three Champions League goals this season, placing him among the top scorers for Monaco.
His performance is expected to boost his prospects for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, where the USMNT will rely on his form.
