The broadcast rights for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in India are nearing finalisation, according to former All India Football Federation (AIFF) general secretary Shaji Prabhakaran. Speaking to the media, Prabhakaran expressed optimism that the deal would be concluded soon, ensuring that Indian football fans can enjoy the tournament without disruption.
Progress on Rights Agreement
Prabhakaran, who served as AIFF general secretary until recently, stated that negotiations with potential broadcasters have advanced significantly. He emphasised that the finalisation of rights is crucial for the growth of football in India, as it will provide widespread access to the World Cup matches. The 2026 edition, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is expected to feature an expanded format with 48 teams.
Prabhakaran noted that the AIFF has been working diligently to secure a deal that benefits both fans and the sport. While he did not disclose specific details about the broadcasters or financial terms, he confirmed that multiple parties have shown interest. The agreement is expected to include both television and digital streaming rights, catering to the diverse viewing preferences of Indian audiences.
Impact on Indian Football
The former AIFF official highlighted that securing broadcast rights well in advance is essential for promoting football at the grassroots level. He stated: "The World Cup is a global spectacle, and having it accessible to Indian fans will inspire young players and boost the sport's popularity across the country." Prabhakaran also stressed the importance of competitive bidding to ensure fair pricing and maximum coverage.
India's football ecosystem has been growing steadily, with increasing viewership for international tournaments. The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar saw record-breaking engagement in India, and the 2026 edition is expected to surpass that. The expanded format will also mean more matches, providing additional opportunities for broadcasters to engage audiences.
Prabhakaran concluded by urging all stakeholders to expedite the process, as time is of the essence. He expressed confidence that the final agreement will be announced in the coming weeks, bringing clarity to fans and broadcasters alike.
