FC Goa Coach Manolo Marquez Aims for All-Goan Senior Team, Praises Youth Development

FC Goa coach Manolo Marquez has revealed his ambitious vision to field a senior team composed entirely of Goan players in the Indian Super League (ISL), though he acknowledges the current squad limitations prevent this ideal scenario. In a recent pre-match media interaction, Marquez emphasized the critical need for continuous grassroots and academy development to bridge this gap.

Current Goan Representation and Youth Integration

During the last clash against Odisha FC, Marquez provided rare starting roles to goalkeeper Bob Jackson Raj and midfielder Harsh Patre, with Brison Fernandes coming on as a second-half substitute. This season, several promising talents from the development squad, including Sitroy Carvalho, Malsawmtlunga, Vellington Fernandes, Jovial Dias, and Lionel Rymmei, have been given opportunities to train with the senior team.

Sitroy Carvalho, a highly regarded centre-back, has even made appearances in prestigious competitions like the AFC Champions League Two and the Super Cup. The tradition of youth progression at FC Goa dates back to 2018, with players like Prachit Gaonkar successfully graduating from the juniors to feature in the ISL last season.

RFDL Success and Upcoming Final Challenge

Marquez took the opportunity to congratulate the FC Goa development squad for their remarkable achievement in the Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL), an under-21 tournament featuring the country's top teams. The team has reached the semifinals for the second consecutive year, making them the only side to achieve this feat.

This season, FC Goa has advanced even further, qualifying for the RFDL final where they will face Bengaluru FC on Saturday. Bengaluru FC, a formidable opponent with many of India's best young footballers largely from Manipur, demonstrated their strength with a commanding 10-0 aggregate win over Kerala Blasters in the semifinals.

"It's not easy with so many top teams and elite young players," Marquez remarked, acknowledging the competitive landscape. The RFDL semifinals featured 16 players from the recent India U-20 SAFF Championship squad, with Goa and Kerala each fielding 11 state-based players, second only to Manipur's 25.

Technical Skills and Modern Football Demands

Marquez highlighted the technical proficiency of Goan players but stressed that modern football requires more than just skill. "I think technically, Goans are very good players, but in modern football that is not enough. Maybe in the past, this quality alone would be good, but now you need to be quick thinking. It's not about being strong but smart," he explained.

He pointed out that while Goan players excel in technical aspects, as seen in the Goa Professional League where teams play from the back, there is a need for enhanced physicality and adaptability. "When you receive the ball, you know that the opponent will press, so you should be able to improvise and adapt," Marquez added.

Future Prospects and Grassroots Commitment

Expressing optimism for the future, Marquez stated, "If Goa continues to work at the grassroots, in the academy, you will see a lot many Goan players in the senior team very soon." This vision is sure to inspire the club's youngsters, as Marquez demonstrated his support by attending the RFDL semifinals against Punjab FC and personally congratulating the squad after they secured their place in the final.

Looking ahead, Marquez is certain to welcome some of these development team players to the senior squad next season, reinforcing FC Goa's commitment to nurturing local talent and achieving long-term success in Indian football.
