Dempo SC Seeks Momentum with Crucial Home Fixtures After First I-League Victory
Panaji: Dempo SC has finally broken their winless streak in the Indian Football League, securing a morale-boosting first victory after seven challenging games. This triumph has injected renewed energy into the team as they prepare for the final stretch of the first phase.
Strategic Focus on Remaining Home Games
With only two matches left in the initial phase, both scheduled at their home ground, Dempo is setting an ambitious target of six points. The five-time national champions demonstrated their potential with a commanding 3-0 win against Shillong Lajong FC last week, showcasing their ability to dominate when in form.
Head coach Samir, a former India defender, emphasized the team's readiness. "We have been trying and doing well. We won the last game. It took a bit of time for players to get along together on the pitch," he stated during a pre-match media interaction. He attributed early struggles to a lack of practice games before the season commenced, but expressed optimism after the recent success.
Current Standings and Challenges
Dempo currently occupies ninth place in the points table with six points from seven matches. Their journey so far includes three draws and three defeats before the breakthrough win against Lajong. The team faced additional hurdles with their six foreign players arriving just before the campaign began, including Argentine midfielder Damian Perez, who debuted last season but joined midway due to visa issues.
Trinidad and Tobago striker Marcus Joseph has maintained his scoring touch this season, though he could benefit from more support upfront. Despite these challenges, the squad remains united and focused.
Upcoming Clash with Aizawl FC
Dempo's next challenge is a crucial home game against former champions Aizawl FC at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, on Saturday at 4pm. Aizawl holds fifth position with nine points, coming off a 1-1 draw with Sreenidi Deccan FC. Samir highlighted the importance of this match, calling it "one of the most crucial games this season for Dempo."
"If you leave two teams, there is not much difference. It is a tight league and a tricky situation for everyone. We are prepared for all eventualities. Everything looks positive after winning the game. First, we need to win against Aizawl and then look ahead," Samir added.
League Dynamics and Title Aspirations
The I-League standings are highly competitive, with Diamond Harbour FC leading at 16 points, followed by Rajasthan FC and Lajong on 12 points each. To have a shot at the title in the second phase, Dempo must break into the top six, making their remaining fixtures critical.
Ivorian defender Aubin Kouakou echoed the team's determination, saying, "The situation is difficult, but it is not impossible. We are focused. We will give everything for these two games. The mood is good now we have some smiles."
Full Squad Availability
In a positive development, Samir confirmed no injury concerns, with a full squad available for the match against Aizawl. This provides Dempo with the flexibility and depth needed to execute their game plan effectively.
As the season reaches its climax, Dempo SC's resilience and strategic focus will be tested. Their ability to build on the recent win could define their campaign, with fans eagerly watching to see if they can secure a top-six finish and keep their title hopes alive.
