New Zealand have called up Will Young to replace the retired Kane Williamson for the remaining two Tests against England, as confirmed by the team management on Friday.
Young's recall
Young, who last played a Test match against West Indies in Christchurch in December, has been brought into the squad after Williamson announced his immediate retirement from all forms of international cricket. The 32-year-old right-handed batter has featured in 23 Tests for New Zealand, amassing 1,215 runs at an average of 31.97, according to ESPNcricinfo.
Most recently, Young was part of New Zealand's ODI tour of Bangladesh, where he managed scores of 30, 2 and 19 in the three-match series. He is scheduled to arrive in England on Sunday, June 14, and will join the squad for training the following day ahead of the second Test at The Oval, which begins on June 17.
Williamson's retirement
Kane Williamson, widely regarded as one of New Zealand's greatest batters and the country's leading run-scorer across formats, announced his retirement from international cricket on Friday. The 35-year-old's decision brings an end to a distinguished 16-year career, during which he played 378 matches for the Black Caps, setting numerous batting records and earning global admiration.
Williamson finishes as New Zealand's all-time leading international run-scorer with 19,346 runs, including 48 centuries and six double-centuries. His captaincy and leadership were also highly praised, as he led the team across all three formats during a golden period from 2016 to 2024. Under his guidance, New Zealand reached two ICC World Cup finals, three semi-finals, and won the inaugural ICC World Test Championship in 2021.
