India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has clarified the decision to include Ayush Badoni in the ODI squad against New Zealand. This move came after Washington Sundar suffered an injury and was ruled out of the remainder of the series.
Kotak's Explanation for Badoni's Selection
Sitanshu Kotak addressed the media ahead of the second ODI. He explained the team's need for a sixth bowling option. Washington Sundar's absence created a gap that required filling.
"Every team would like to have a sixth bowling option," Kotak stated. He emphasized that if a main bowler gets injured early, someone else must step up. Badoni's right-arm offbreaks make him a suitable replacement for Sundar's bowling style.
Badoni's Track Record and Skills
The coach pointed to Badoni's consistent performances. He has played well for India A and in the Indian Premier League. Kotak specifically mentioned:
- Scoring a couple of fifties for India A
- Performing reliably in white-ball cricket
- Providing useful bowling when required
"He has been playing, he has been performing," Kotak said about the young Delhi cricketer.
Statistical Backing for the Decision
Ayush Badoni brings solid numbers to the table. His List A career shows promising figures:
- 693 runs in 27 matches at an average of 36.47
- Strike rate exceeding 93 with one century and five half-centuries
- 18 wickets with the ball at an average of 29.72
- Economy rate of 4.54 with best figures of 3/29
During recent A-team tours, Badoni demonstrated his capabilities. Against South Africa A, he scored 66 in an unofficial ODI. Against Australia A, he took three wickets in two matches.
IPL Performance and Team Balance
Badoni's IPL experience with Lucknow Super Giants further supports his selection. In 56 matches, he has:
- Scored 963 runs at an average of 26.75
- Maintained a strike rate of 138.56
- Registered six half-centuries with a top score of 74
Kotak stressed the importance of flexibility within the playing eleven. "If required, somebody should be able to bowl four, five or three/four overs," he added. This need for a part-time bowling option influenced Badoni's selection over other candidates.
Squad Composition and Context
The inclusion raised some eyebrows initially. Established all-rounders like Riyan Parag, Rinku Singh and Axar Patel were already available. However, the team management sought a specific skill set.
Badoni had not been part of the national setup before this call-up. His selection represents a fresh approach from the think tank. The coaching staff believes his dual abilities justify the opportunity.
India's squad for the New Zealand ODIs features experienced players alongside newcomers. The team aims to maintain balance while testing new combinations ahead of future tournaments.
