KKR's Shane Watson Backs Cameron Green to Thrive Despite Record Rs 25.20 Crore IPL Price Tag
Watson: Cameron Green Unfazed by KKR's Rs 25.20 Crore IPL Price Tag

Shane Watson Confident Cameron Green Will Excel Despite High IPL Auction Price

In the high-stakes world of the Indian Premier League, hefty price tags have often become a burden for top buys, with players like Yuvraj Singh in 2014 and Rishabh Pant in 2025 struggling under the weight of massive auction sums. Now, attention turns to Australian allrounder Cameron Green, acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders for a staggering Rs 25.20 crore in the November mini-auction, sparking fears he might succumb to similar pressures.

Watson Dismisses Concerns Over Green's Price Tag

Ahead of KKR's opening match against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night, assistant coach Shane Watson firmly rejected these worries. He emphasized that Green, known for his aggressive play, thrives on freedom rather than feeling constrained by expectations. "I've witnessed players crumble under high price tags in the past, where overwhelming expectations stifled their performance," Watson stated during a press briefing on Saturday. "However, Cameron certainly doesn't see it that way. His mindset in the IPL is that he has nothing to lose."

Watson highlighted Green's previous IPL successes, noting that when Mumbai Indians bought him for INR 17.5 crore in 2023, he delivered an impressive season with 452 runs at a strike rate of 160.28 and six wickets. "This history shows he performs best when playing freely, and we've seen how beneficial that approach has been over the last couple of seasons," Watson explained. He added that Green's recent training sessions have been marked by excitement and liberty, further dispelling concerns about the price tag affecting his game.

Watson's Excitement Over Working with Green

Joining KKR has been a thrilling opportunity for Watson, particularly due to the chance to mentor Green. "One of the biggest draws for me coming to KKR is working closely with Cameron Green," Watson shared. "I've had several conversations with him over the years, and being able to support his growth and journey is something I'm genuinely excited about." This collaboration aims to harness Green's potential and maintain his high-performance levels in the tournament.

KKR's Challenges and Opportunities with New Players

With injuries sidelining pacers Harshit Rana and Akash Deep for IPL-2026, Watson acknowledged KKR's efforts to secure Sri Lankan bowler Matheesha Pathirana. "We're in a waiting game, guided by the Sri Lankan cricket board, and doing everything possible to bring him here soon," Watson said. He assured that KKR's medical staff shares the same interests as Sri Lankan cricket, prioritizing Pathirana's fitness and not rushing his return.

Watson also praised Zimbabwean pacer Blessing Muzarabani, recently drafted into the squad, expressing optimism about his impact. "Life's all about opportunities, and Blessing has worked hard for this chance. As a tall, skilled athlete, testing himself against the world's best batters on this stage is fantastic," Watson remarked, showing confidence in Muzarabani's abilities.

Raghuvanshi's Dedication to Wicketkeeping

In other team news, Watson revealed that young top-order batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi has been rigorously training as a wicketkeeper for the past five to six months. "Raghuvanshi has been working tirelessly on his wicketkeeping skills," Watson noted, indicating KKR's focus on developing versatile players to strengthen their lineup for the competitive season ahead.
