Monsoon rains bring relief to Vidarbha cotton farmers
Cotton farmers in Maharashtra's Vidarbha region are feeling optimistic as monsoon rains have finally arrived, spurring hopes for timely sowing. The annual average rainfall in Buldhana district is around 750 mm to 900 mm, and there was no rainfall in June until two days ago.
Dry spell breaks after weeks of anxiety
The parched Khadakpurna river near Sindkhed Raja in Maharashtra had been a stark reminder of the dry conditions. However, recent rains have changed the outlook for farmers who were worried about delayed sowing.
Impact on cotton cultivation
According to Mrityunjay Bose, the rains are expected to accelerate sowing activities across the region. Farmers are now hopeful of a good harvest if the monsoon remains consistent. The Vidarbha region is a key cotton-producing area in Maharashtra, and timely rains are crucial for the crop.
"The rains have come as a blessing. We were worried about the dry spell, but now we can start sowing," said a local farmer, as quoted in the report.
