Saiteja debuted for the US national team in ODIs in May 2022 at age 18 and in T20s in August 2024, quickly establishing himself as a linchpin in the batting lineup.
His father, Nageshwar Reddy, now settled in the US, reminisces about the early spark: "I was watching the 2011 World Cup in the US, praying for India's victory. Saiteja watched alongside me and developed an instant affinity for the game." This moment ignited a passion that would define his son's future.
A Transcontinental Cricket Odyssey: Training from New Jersey to Hyderabad
Saiteja's cricketing education began at age seven at the Dream Cricket Academy in Hillsborough under coach Damion Morgan. After two and a half years, the academy's closure led him to Cricmax Academy in Old Bridge, New Jersey, where former India cricketer Ashok Patel became his mentor. "I created a youth league with four teams at my own cost to ensure he got match practice," Ashok Patel revealed, highlighting the personalized effort behind his development.
Nageshwar Reddy credits Ashok Patel as instrumental in Saiteja's ascent. "Ashok sir played a key role, organizing tours to Dallas, North Carolina, England, and India. Saiteja regularly participated in age-group tournaments in Mumbai and toured Guyana with coach Linden Fraser annually for five years, gaining invaluable exposure," said Nageshwar, who works as a senior manager with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority in DC.
Sacrifices and Dedication: A Family's Commitment to Cricket
Recognizing Saiteja's unwavering commitment, the family made a bold move in 2018, relocating to Hyderabad for training at the VVS Laxman Cricket Academy. "My son and I came to Hyderabad, leaving my wife and two daughters in the US. I took a significant pay cut, and my wife Prasanna Lakshmi shouldered the family responsibilities. We took this risk because of his consistency and dedication," Nageshwar recalled. After a year of intensive training, they returned to the US, with Saiteja's skills honed for international competition.
Despite irregular match schedules, his extensive touring prepared him thoroughly. He broke into the US national team at 18, achieving notable feats:
- Third-highest run-scorer in an ODI series with 874 runs.
- Fifth-youngest batter to score an ODI century at 18 years and 355 days.
