Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam's (TVK) AK Sai J Saravanan Kumar emerged victorious in the Thirubhuvanai assembly constituency, defeating All India N.R. Congress's (AINRC) B Kobiga by a margin of 701 votes. The high-stakes showdown saw incumbent P Angalane, now representing the DMK (SPA), seeking to maintain his hold against his perennial rival B Kobiga of the AINRC (NDA). However, the entry of Saravanan, who previously contested under the BJP banner in Oussudu, transformed the traditional see-saw battle into a complex three-way race for this vital reserved seat.
Constituency Profile
Thirubuvunai, a semi-rural scheduled caste-reserved constituency located in the north-eastern part of Puducherry, is characterised by small-scale farming activity and steadily expanding peri-urban settlements. In the 2021 assembly elections, P Angalane, standing independently, won the seat by defeating B Kobiga by 2,359 votes. In the 2016 assembly elections, B Kobiga had won the seat by defeating P Angalane by a margin of 1,432 votes, reflecting a see-saw of fortunes between the two candidates in the past polls.
Voter Turnout
The constituency recorded approximately 87.10% voter participation for the 2026 assembly election, a slight dip compared to 89.6% in the 2021 polls. The 2026 Puducherry assembly elections took place on April 9, recording a historic voter turnout of 91.23%, with results declared on May 4.
Political Context
The contest shifted from a traditional two-way battle into a high-stakes three-way struggle between the ruling NDA (led by the AINRC and BJP), the SPA (anchored by the Congress and DMK), and the newly formed TVK–NMK alliance headed by actor-politician Vijay. TVK's emergence as a formidable force in Tamil Nadu has reshaped the political landscape, pushing DMK and AIADMK to the margins in several constituencies.
