Tony Parkes, the beloved figure affectionately known as "Mr Blackburn Rovers," has sadly passed away at the age of 76. The former midfielder and coach dedicated over three decades of his life to the club, cementing his status as one of the most respected individuals in Blackburn Rovers' history.
A Life Devoted to Blackburn Rovers
Parkes' journey with Blackburn Rovers began in 1970 when he joined from Buxton for a modest fee of £5,000. He remained with the club until 2004, leaving behind an enduring legacy. The club confirmed the heartbreaking news and expressed profound sorrow over his passing. Parkes, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2020, died on Wednesday, as shared by his daughter Natalie. Known for his unwavering loyalty and tireless work ethic, he played a pivotal role both on and off the pitch.
From Player to Coach
Tony Parkes spent 34 years at Blackburn Rovers, working closely with the club as a player, coach, and caretaker manager. He made over 400 appearances as a midfielder, scoring 46 goals before retiring from playing in 1982. Shortly after, he joined the coaching staff and served under several managers, including Kenny Dalglish during the club's famous Premier League-winning season in 1994-95.
During his playing days, Parkes was known as a hardworking and determined midfielder who carried the ball forward and scored crucial goals when needed. His style of play made him a key component of the team during the 1970s, including their Third Division title win in 1974-75.
Caretaker Manager and Savior
Parkes also served six spells as caretaker manager. One of his most notable roles came in the 1996-97 season after Ray Harford left the club. At that time, Blackburn Rovers were at the bottom of the table and facing serious danger of relegation. Parkes took charge and masterminded the team's escape from the drop zone, securing their Premier League status.
Blackburn Rovers praised him as a club great whose impact will always be remembered. They noted that he was respected for his dedication, modest nature, and passion for the team, while offering sincere condolences to his daughter Natalie and loved ones during this difficult period.
Later Career and Tributes
After leaving Blackburn in 2004, Parkes worked as a scout for Leicester City and later joined Blackpool as an assistant manager under Simon Grayson. He even had a short spell as caretaker manager there before ending his coaching career.
Tributes have poured in from across the football world. Former striker Alan Shearer remembered Parkes as a wonderful person and expressed his sadness at the news. Blackburn Rovers will honor Parkes with a special tribute at their final home game of the season against Leicester City on May 2, celebrating the life of a man who gave everything to the club.
