NEW DELHI: In the West Bengal assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) retained the Nalhati constituency, with incumbent MLA Rajendra Prasad Singh (Raju Singh) securing 87,744 votes. He defeated Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Anil Kumar Singh by a margin of 13,446 votes. Anil Kumar Singh polled 74,298 votes and finished second in the contest.
Constituency Details
Nalhati is an assembly constituency located in West Bengal’s Birbhum district. It is one of the seven assembly segments under the Birbhum Lok Sabha constituency and is part of the state’s 294 assembly constituencies. The seat has historically seen contests among major political parties.
Previous Election Results
Rajendra Prasad Singh of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) is the sitting MLA from Nalhati. He won the seat in the 2021 assembly election with 56.55% of the total votes polled, followed by BJP candidate Tapas Kumar Yadav, who received 29.15% of the votes. In the recently held assembly polls, TMC entrusted Singh to retain the seat, and he was challenged by BJP's Anil Singh.
Earlier, the constituency was also represented by TMC in the 2016 assembly election, when Moinuddin Shams secured victory. In 2011, the seat was won by Abhijit Mukherjee of the Indian National Congress (INC).
Broader Election Trends
While the BJP maintained a broader lead across the state, Nalhati remained a stronghold for the TMC. The result underscores the party's continued influence in the Birbhum district.
