Manoj Tiwary Urges Immediate Return of Rohit Sharma as ODI Captain
Tiwary: Rohit Sharma Should Replace Gill as ODI Captain

Manoj Tiwary Advocates for Rohit Sharma's Immediate Return as ODI Captain

Former India batter Manoj Tiwary has made a strong case for the immediate reinstatement of Rohit Sharma as India's ODI captain, following the team's disappointing home series loss to New Zealand. Tiwary's comments come in the wake of India's first home ODI series defeat to New Zealand in over three decades, a result that has intensified scrutiny on current captain Shubman Gill's leadership.

Questioning the Captaincy Change

Tiwary expressed bewilderment at the decision to remove Rohit Sharma from the ODI captaincy so soon after his Champions Trophy triumph. "What was the need to remove Rohit Sharma from the captaincy?" Tiwary questioned during an interaction with InsideSport. "I'm pretty sure that if Rohit were leading even today in the ODIs, it would have been a different result altogether." He emphasized that the team was progressing positively under Rohit's leadership, making the timing of the change particularly puzzling.

Gill's Struggles and Tiwary's Solution

Shubman Gill's tenure as ODI captain has been challenging, with a 2-1 series loss in Australia last October followed by the recent setback against New Zealand. While India managed a 2-1 ODI series victory against South Africa in December, Gill was absent due to injury, with KL Rahul stepping in as captain. Tiwary did not mince words when asked if Gill should be replaced by Rohit. "Yes, absolutely. That's what I'm suggesting because there's still time to course correct," he stated firmly. "It's about the World Cup. It's not just about a bilateral series or a random tournament we are going to play."

Experience Over Youth for World Cup Success

Tiwary highlighted the vast disparity in leadership experience between Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, especially with the World Cup scheduled for next year. "Rohit is not a little better than Shubman, but a lot better, currently," Tiwary asserted. "That's why he's such a successful captain." He presented a compelling statistical argument, suggesting that under Rohit's captaincy, India's chances of winning the World Cup would be significantly higher. "If Rohit becomes the captain, what is the percentage chance of winning? And if Shubman leads, what is the percentage chance of winning? I think everyone will say that if Rohit is the captain, then there is an 85 to 90 per cent chance of winning the World Cup."

Contrasting Performances in the New Zealand Series

The recent series against New Zealand highlighted the contrasting fortunes of the two players. Rohit Sharma, who entered the series as the world's number one ODI batter after productive performances against Australia and South Africa, struggled with the bat, managing only 61 runs across three innings. In contrast, Shubman Gill outperformed his predecessor, scoring 135 runs in three innings, including two half-centuries. Despite Gill's superior batting form, Tiwary's focus remains squarely on leadership qualities and strategic acumen, which he believes are crucial for India's World Cup aspirations.

Tiwary's call for a captaincy reversal underscores the ongoing debate within Indian cricket about balancing youth and experience. As the team prepares for future challenges, including the upcoming World Cup, the decision on leadership could prove pivotal in shaping India's fortunes on the global stage.
