Suspended BCA Official Parag Patel Permitted to Vote in Baroda Cricket Association Election

In a significant development in Vadodara, former Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) joint secretary Parag Patel, who was suspended from the association last month, was allowed to cast his vote in the crucial election held on Sunday. This decision came after Patel approached the BCA ombudsman and ethics officer, Justice A J Desai, challenging the suspension imposed by the BCA management led by the Revival Group.

Ombudsman's Intervention Restores Voting Rights

Parag Patel expressed his gratitude to Justice Desai for the favorable ruling. "I am thankful to Justice Desai for allowing me to vote. My rights have been restored," Patel told TOI. He emphasized that his petition against the suspension is still under consideration by the ombudsman, indicating that the legal proceedings are ongoing. Patel, who is a supporter of the Royal Satyamev Jayate Group, maintained his innocence, stating, "I was wrongly suspended without following the rules. Also, I did not do or say anything wrong."

The ombudsman's order included a specific directive regarding Patel's ballot. It mandated that his vote be kept in a sealed cover and only opened after the ombudsman's final ruling in the current proceedings. This precaution ensures that the integrity of the election process is maintained while addressing Patel's grievances.

Background of the Suspension and Dispute

The controversy began when the BCA issued Patel a show-cause notice after the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in November. The notice demanded an explanation for his actions, which included protesting during the AGM and posting what the association termed as "provocative videos" on his social media accounts. Patel responded by asking the BCA management to specify which social media posts they objected to, but he claims he received no reply.

Additionally, Patel contested the validity of the notice, arguing that it was signed by former BCA secretary Ajit Lele, whose term had ended, thus questioning his authority to issue such a notice. Despite this, the BCA management proceeded with his suspension.

The BCA management, led by the Revival Group, justified the suspension by alleging that Patel made false claims about the Kotambi International Cricket Stadium on his social media. They accused him of stating that the association lacked the necessary permissions and infrastructure to host the India-New Zealand One Day International (ODI), which they deemed misleading and damaging.

Previous Controversies and Ongoing Legal Battle

This is not the first time Parag Patel has faced disciplinary action from the BCA. In 2022, he was removed from the BCA's apex council for writing to the ombudsman without the council's permission and for allegedly making personal allegations against the treasurer. Patel has consistently contested these allegations, asserting that he was wrongly suspended on that occasion as well.

The current situation highlights the ongoing tensions within the Baroda Cricket Association, with factions like the Revival Group and the Royal Satyamev Jayate Group vying for influence. Patel's case underscores the complexities of cricket administration in India, where internal disputes often spill into public view and require judicial intervention.

As the ombudsman continues to hear Patel's petition against his suspension, the outcome could have broader implications for governance and transparency in cricket associations across the country. The sealed ballot adds an element of suspense to the election results, pending the final decision from Justice Desai.
