Suryakumar Yadav Opens Up on Format Preferences and Career Journey

In a revealing interview with PTI, Suryakumar Yadav, the captain who recently guided the India national cricket team to a historic victory in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, shared his thoughts on his cricketing evolution. While he harbors dreams of playing Test cricket, Yadav admitted that the T20 format is where he feels most at home and natural.

From Red-Ball Roots to T20 Mastery

Suryakumar Yadav reflected on his early days in cricket, emphasizing his foundation in red-ball cricket. "I started with red-ball cricket itself, playing Ranji Trophy for 10-12 years. Growing up in Bombay, everything revolves around the red ball, so that was my initial training ground," he explained. However, as his career progressed, a shift occurred towards white-ball cricket, particularly T20s, where he found his groove and developed a strong affinity.

He elaborated on this transition, stating, "Gradually, when we began playing white-ball cricket, my inclination shifted a bit towards that. After that, I immersed myself in the T20 format. I also made concerted efforts to excel in One-Day cricket, but unfortunately, nothing significant materialized there." Yadav highlighted how his skills became finely tuned to T20 cricket, making it his preferred and most successful arena.

Challenges in ODI Cricket

Despite his T20 prowess, Suryakumar Yadav candidly discussed his struggles with the 50-over format. "I feel that as much as I have experienced ODI cricket closely, it is a format that requires batting in three distinct phases. Sometimes, if you enter early after quick wickets, you must bat like in Test cricket. Then, you need to maintain a good strike rate as in a One Day, and later, finish like in T20. This complexity is something I never fully grasped, despite my best efforts," he admitted.

His last ODI appearance was during the 2023 Cricket World Cup final against Australia, where he scored 18 runs off 28 balls. India's loss in that match marked the end of his ODI involvement, underscoring the challenges he faced in this format.

The Enduring Charm of ODI Cricket

Despite his personal difficulties, Yadav acknowledged the unique appeal of ODI cricket, especially highlighted during the 2023 World Cup. "When I was with the team for the 2023 ODI World Cup, the vibe and atmosphere were completely different from the T20 World Cups in 2026 and 2024. The build-up to the final was intense and special. ODI cricket has its own distinct charm, just as T20 does," he recalled, showing appreciation for the format's enduring popularity and emotional impact.

Balancing Dreams and Reality

Suryakumar Yadav's journey illustrates a balance between unfulfilled aspirations and current successes. While he dreams of Test cricket, his dominance in T20s has cemented his role as a key player for India. His insights offer a glimpse into the mindset of a modern cricketer navigating multiple formats, with T20 emerging as his natural habitat amidst the evolving landscape of international cricket.
