The journey of Sunil Joshi, from a small-town boy with grand aspirations to a celebrated cricketer and coach, reached a poignant milestone on Tuesday. The 55-year-old former India all-rounder experienced a full-circle moment as he returned to his origins in Hubballi, where a pavilion at the KSCA Rajnagar Stadium was officially named after him. Joshi attempted to conceal his feelings, but tears streamed freely as memories spanning over four decades surged back. As a young athlete, he would rise before dawn and travel nearly 60 kilometers from his hometown of Gadag to train on this very ground. Years later, he made his Ranji Trophy debut at this venue and has since revisited it in various capacities, including as a coach.
During the ceremony, BCCI president Mithun Manhas unveiled the pavilion block dedicated to Joshi. Accompanied by his wife, Dr. Ravneet, Joshi spoke about the deep emotional significance of the occasion. "Gadag gave me birth, Hubballi gave me cricket and character," he stated, capturing the essence of his connection to the region.

In a conversation with media, Joshi reflected on the honor. "It gives me immense pleasure to receive this recognition, especially since it comes at the place where I began my journey. To see my name on the pavilion block holds profound meaning for my family and me," he expressed.
Recalling his debut at the stadium, the current spin coach at the BCCI Centre of Excellence shared one of his earliest pivotal memories. "My Ranji Trophy debut was here against Hyderabad in 1992. I remained unbeaten on 86 and gained invaluable lessons from that match. At 40, we were eight wickets down when Venkatesh Prasad joined me. He advised, 'Take your time. I know you're anxious for your maiden half-century, but scoring a century is more crucial here.'"

Joshi emphasized his hope that this honor will motivate young cricketers to dream big, particularly those from smaller towns. "I hail from the mofussil, and if my name on this stand can inspire even one young cricketer in the next five days or in the years to come, then it will have true significance," said the former India left-arm spinner.
He extended his gratitude to the Karnataka State Cricket Association office-bearers and the managing committee, many of whom are former teammates, for the recognition. "I'm deeply thankful to KSCA president and my dear friend Venkatesh Prasad and his team for this honor. Having my wife, Ravneet, here was special because she has played an immense role in my journey. I wouldn't have achieved this far without her unconditional support," he added.
