Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar launched a scathing critique of the Delhi Capitals (DC) batters, calling out their lack of intent during their IPL 2026 match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Friday. Speaking during the television commentary, Gavaskar questioned the team's approach in the powerplay, stating, "They don't look to hit sixes."
Powerplay struggles for Delhi Capitals
DC openers KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka managed only two sixes in the first six overs, both coming off Nissanka's bat. Rahul did not clear the boundary once during his innings, as DC posted just 55 runs in the powerplay. Rahul was dismissed for 23 off 14 balls by Kartik Tyagi on the final ball of the fifth over, caught at mid-on by Cameron Green.
Match context and team changes
KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and opted to bowl first. KKR fielded an unchanged playing XI from their previous game, while DC made two changes, bringing in Mukesh Kumar and Vipraj Nigam in place of T Natarajan and Karun Nair.
Delhi Capitals began their IPL 2026 campaign on a strong note but have since encountered a rough patch, losing four of their last five matches. With the playoff race heating up, they entered this fixture in a must-win scenario, sitting seventh on the points table with four victories from 10 games.
Kolkata Knight Riders are also in a precarious position, despite winning their last three matches. They occupy eighth place on the standings and will look to extend their winning streak to stabilize their campaign and climb the table.
