Former Indian cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri has opened up about the reasons behind Jasprit Bumrah's underwhelming performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. Bumrah, who is widely regarded as one of the best bowlers in the world, failed to make a significant impact for his franchise, leading to speculation about his form and fitness.
Workload Management a Key Factor
Shastri pointed out that Bumrah's heavy workload in international cricket over the past year might have contributed to his lackluster show in the IPL. "Jasprit has been bowling non-stop for India across formats. The body needs rest, and sometimes a slight dip in rhythm is natural," Shastri explained. He emphasized that managing the workload of premier bowlers is crucial to ensure their longevity and peak performance.
Lack of Rhythm and Match Practice
Another factor highlighted by Shastri was Bumrah's lack of match practice before the IPL. Due to a brief injury layoff, Bumrah missed a few international matches, which affected his rhythm. "When you miss game time, it takes a while to get back into the groove. The IPL is a demanding tournament, and even small lapses can be exploited by batsmen," he added.
Comparison with Previous Seasons
In previous IPL seasons, Bumrah has been a standout performer, taking wickets at crucial junctures and maintaining an impressive economy rate. However, in IPL 2026, his numbers dipped significantly. He managed only a handful of wickets and conceded runs at a higher rate than usual. Shastri attributed this to the cumulative effect of mental and physical fatigue.
Franchise's Role and Support System
Shastri also stressed the importance of franchise support systems in helping players like Bumrah regain form. "Teams need to have open communication with players about their workload. Sometimes, a break or a change in role can help," he suggested. He added that Bumrah's class is permanent, and a temporary slump should not be a cause for concern.
Looking Ahead
With the T20 World Cup on the horizon, Shastri expressed confidence that Bumrah would bounce back strongly. "He is a champion bowler. A few bad games don't define him. I am sure he will work on his rhythm and come back stronger," Shastri concluded. The cricketing fraternity will be keenly watching Bumrah's performance in the upcoming international series.
