Sai Kishore: Team First in IPL 2026, Instinct Over Data

R Sai Kishore Embraces Team-First Approach Amid IPL 2026 Wait

Standing tall at 6-foot-5, R. Sai Kishore brings a distinctive trajectory and unwavering accuracy to the cricket crease. Following an impressive IPL-2025 season where he secured 19 wickets in 15 matches for the Gujarat Titans, the Tamil Nadu left-arm spinner finds himself on the sidelines in the initial phases of IPL-2026. Despite not featuring in the playing XI so far this season, the 29-year-old remains remarkably composed, prioritizing the franchise's goals over personal ambitions.

Team Success Trumps Individual Disappointment

In an exclusive interview facilitated by the Gujarat Titans, Sai Kishore shared his perspective with a focus on collective achievement. "Cricket is not an individual sport, it's a team sport," he stated. "At the end of the day, you celebrate when you win the trophy, celebrate when you win the IPL. So, the team always comes first in all decisions. As a leader myself, I understand this more than anyone else. While it's disappointing not to be in the playing XI currently, it's crucial to remember that the team comes first. Whenever conditions favor more spinners, I'll get my chance."

Adapting to Dynamic IPL Conditions

With 32 IPL wickets to his name, Sai Kishore recognizes that T20 cricket is heavily influenced by pitch conditions. Early in the tournament, flat surfaces have consistently favored batters, a trend continuing in IPL-2026. However, the experienced spinner anticipates a shift as the season progresses. "IPL is a very dynamic tournament. How the tournament unfolds and how the wickets are playing are crucial factors in getting the combinations right," he explained. "The team always comes first, and when wickets start to deteriorate with increased heat, spinners will gradually come into play across the tournament. Currently, not many spinners have been able to change games as it's mainly batting-friendly."

Role Clarity and Instinctive Decision-Making

For a spinner, maintaining control on flat IPL tracks requires a delicate balance between containing runs and hunting for wickets. Sai Kishore emphasized that role clarity from the franchise simplifies this challenge. "My role has been clearly mentioned: to provide control to the captain. It becomes easy for any player to play to his full potential when the role is defined," he said.

When executing this control, he relies on reading the game dynamically rather than adhering to a rigid plan. "A lot depends on player to player and situation to situation. If a batter is settled, you might aim to take him off strike or be more defensive. For a new batter, you try to get his wicket. It's all about decision-making skills in that moment, on that day, on that wicket. With instinct, it's easier to manage when to attack and when to defend."

Trusting Instincts Over Analytics

In an era dominated by analytics and match-ups, Sai Kishore, who has captained Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket, believes numbers only tell part of the story. "No matter what data you follow, your instincts always precede. At that moment, what you feel is what you'll do. Data is important, and knowing the game is crucial, but trusting your instincts and inner voice is what this game is all about," he asserted.

Focus on Self-Improvement and National Aspirations

Sai Kishore has already experienced international success, making his T20I debut during India's gold medal-winning campaign at the 2023 Asian Games, where he took 3/12 against Bangladesh in the semifinals. However, he hasn't secured another spot in the Indian team across formats. Instead of fixating on a national call-up, his philosophy centers on self-improvement and thorough preparation.

"To be relevant as a spinner in India, you must excel in all three facets: be a brilliant fielder, decent with the bat, which isn't easy. In the desire to play for the country, you naturally improve as a cricketer," he noted. "I focus on making my garden very beautiful by working on my game and being ready with skill sets. When you're absolutely ready, chances often come on their own. Until then, I aim to enjoy my game and be happy mentally, skillfully, emotionally, and physically."
