Rory McIlroy Says LIV Golf Players Were 'Blindsided' by Uncertainty
Rory McIlroy Says LIV Golf Players Were Blindsided

Rory McIlroy did not hold back his emotions when discussing the growing challenges surrounding LIV Golf ahead of the PGA Championship in Philadelphia. The world number two disclosed that he had heard months earlier that the Saudi-backed league was heading towards significant trouble. His remarks came after reports emerged that the Public Investment Fund was stepping away from providing the same level of financial support to LIV Golf as it had in previous years.

McIlroy's Insights on LIV Golf's Issues

Speaking at Aronimink Golf Club before the PGA Championship, McIlroy explained that many people outside LIV Golf were aware of serious developments long before the players inside the league realized them. The four-time major winner stated that this situation left numerous LIV golfers shocked, particularly because they did not anticipate such sudden uncertainty regarding the tour's future.

McIlroy also emphasized that players who joined LIV Golf accepted the inherent risks of leaving the PGA Tour. While he avoided overtly mocking anyone, his comments carried a strong undertone as questions continue to mount about LIV Golf's future, prize money, and tournament schedule.

Players Blindsided by Developments

McIlroy revealed that conversations with Ricky McCormick, the caddie for Tom McKibbin, helped him recognize early signs of the problems building within LIV Golf. He mentioned that he even inquired before LIV Golf's Mexico event whether players had heard about any potential changes.

He said, "I feel like a lot of us knew before the players did that this was going to happen. Like, I was hearing about this back in March, April time."

McIlroy added, "One of my best friends, Ricky (McCormick), caddies for Tom McKibbin, who's over there, and I would talk to him all the time about what was going on. I was saying to Ricky, even before Mexico, 'Have you guys heard any of this stuff?' He was like, 'No, everything seems okay over here'. It just feels like the rug was pulled from under their feet and everyone was sort of blindsided by it."

LIV Golf's Uncertain Future

These comments came as 11 LIV Golf players, including Bryson DeChambeau, prepared to compete at the PGA Championship. Reports have suggested that LIV Golf might reduce its 14-event schedule next season. Prize purses, which once reached $30 million, could also drop sharply if new funding is not secured.

McIlroy expressed uncertainty about how long LIV Golf can continue in its current form. He explained, "If they do somehow get a schedule together for next year, it seems like it's going to look drastically different to what it's looked like over the last four years."

McIlroy's Own Challenges

Away from the LIV Golf discussion, McIlroy dealt with a minor injury concern during practice on Tuesday. He stopped his session after only three holes due to a blister under the nail on his right little toe. Nevertheless, the recent Masters champion said his mindset feels much stronger compared to last year, when he struggled to find motivation after finally winning the green jacket.
