Rithika Sri: Tamil Nadu's First Transgender Cricket Umpire Makes History
Rithika Sri: First Transgender Umpire from Tamil Nadu

Indian cricket is witnessing a gradual shift, with new faces emerging not only on the field but also in decision-making roles such as umpiring. These changes, though seemingly small, carry profound significance for those who have historically been marginalized. A story from Tamil Nadu is now garnering attention for all the right reasons, as Rithika Sri steps into cricket umpiring, achieving a quiet but historic milestone.

Rithika Sri Becomes First Transgender Umpire from Tamil Nadu

Rithika Sri, hailing from Salem, has become the first transgender umpire from Tamil Nadu. Her entry into this field is regarded as a notable moment for state cricket, particularly in terms of inclusivity. A key development that facilitated this change came from the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), which introduced an "other" category in the gender section of its State Panel Umpire exams. This modification made the application process more accessible for diverse candidates.

Early Life and Background of Rithika Sri

Born as R. Muthuraj in Salem, Tamil Nadu, Rithika Sri later transitioned and identifies as a transwoman. She holds a diploma in Mechanical Engineering and previously worked at a call centre in Mohali before entering cricket. Her interest in cricket umpiring sparked while watching the Indian Premier League (IPL), evolving from casual curiosity into a serious pursuit.

How Her Umpiring Journey Began

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Rithika Sri returned to her hometown and decided to focus on cricket umpiring. From 2021 onward, she began officiating matches in Salem and Coimbatore, steadily gaining experience in local tournaments. In 2024, she completed her gender transition in Coimbatore. She also participated in discussions that supported the inclusion of the "other" gender category in the TNCA umpire examination system.

Difficult Moments During Her Journey

Rithika Sri has openly shared that her path was fraught with challenges. She faced difficult situations while trying to establish herself in cricket umpiring. Recalling an incident in Coimbatore, she said, "The first time in Coimbatore, I went to watch because they wanted me to get familiar with the new district, but I was denied entry, and there were hurtful comments. I went back home crying after an hour, but not before fighting back against them. People often accuse trans people of begging, but then, at the same time, they don't allow us to pursue a dignified livelihood. Can't a transperson become an umpire?" Despite such experiences, she persevered and continued her journey without stepping away from the sport.

Support from Cricket Associations

Alongside challenges, Rithika Sri also received support from cricket authorities. The Coimbatore District Cricket Association ensured she was not discriminated against at venues. Officials including R. Chandramouli and K. Mahalingam worked to manage the situation and guarantee fair access. She also noted that matches were shifted from a venue that denied her entry.

This story highlights the growing acceptance and inclusivity in Indian cricket, paving the way for more diverse participation in the sport.
