Punjab cricket team secured their place in the Vijay Hazare Trophy semifinals with an emphatic 183-run victory over Madhya Pradesh in the quarterfinal match played in Bengaluru on Tuesday. The team displayed dominant batting and bowling performances to outclass their opponents completely.
Strong batting foundation sets up massive total
Batting first after winning the toss, Punjab posted an imposing total of 345 runs for the loss of six wickets in their allotted 50 overs. Captain Prabhsimran Singh led from the front with an excellent innings of 88 runs from just 86 deliveries. His aggressive batting set the tone for Punjab's innings right from the beginning.
The team got off to a flying start with Prabhsimran and opening partner Harnoor Singh putting together a solid partnership of 116 runs in just over 21 overs. Harnoor contributed a valuable 51 runs from 71 balls before being dismissed in the 22nd over by Aryan Pandey, giving Madhya Pradesh their first breakthrough.
Middle order maintains momentum
Anmolpreet Singh then joined Prabhsimran at the crease and kept the scoreboard ticking with steady batting. The captain continued his aggressive approach until the 30th over when Kuldeep Sen finally dismissed him. Anmolpreet then took charge of the innings, scoring a brisk 70 runs from 62 balls.
Nehal Wadhera provided the late acceleration with a quickfire 56 runs from just 38 deliveries. He added 76 crucial runs for the fourth wicket with Anmolpreet, maintaining Punjab's scoring momentum. Ramandeep Singh contributed a valuable 24 runs from 15 balls towards the end, pushing the total close to the 350-run mark.
For Madhya Pradesh, Tripuresh Singh returned bowling figures of 2 for 61 from his 10 overs, while captain Venkatesh Iyer claimed two wickets for 60 runs in seven overs.
Madhya Pradesh batting collapses under pressure
Chasing a daunting target of 346 runs for victory, Madhya Pradesh's batting lineup crumbled under pressure. They were bowled out for just 162 runs in 31.2 overs, losing wickets at regular intervals throughout their innings.
The team found themselves in deep trouble early, reduced to 66 runs for the loss of five wickets by the 17th over. Rajat Patidar provided some resistance with a top score of 38 runs from 40 balls, but his dismissal in the 27th over left Madhya Pradesh struggling at 132 for seven wickets.
Tripuresh Singh was the only other batter to cross the 30-run mark, scoring 31 runs before being dismissed. The rest of the batting lineup failed to make significant contributions against Punjab's disciplined bowling attack.
Punjab bowlers share spoils in clinical performance
Punjab's bowling unit delivered a comprehensive team performance, with all bowlers contributing to the victory. Sanvir Singh led the attack with impressive figures of 3 wickets for 31 runs in his six overs, putting constant pressure on the Madhya Pradesh batters.
Gurnoor Brar, Krish Bhagat and Ramandeep Singh supported him well, each picking up two wickets in the match. Their combined effort ensured Madhya Pradesh never recovered from their early setbacks and were dismissed well short of the target.
