Ricky Ponting Lauds India as One of the Greatest T20 Teams in History
Former Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting has showered praise on the Indian national cricket team following their commanding triumph in the T20 World Cup 2026. Ponting described the current Indian squad as one of the most formidable T20 teams ever assembled, highlighting their exceptional depth and consistency on the global stage.
India Secures Historic Third T20 World Cup Title
India clinched their third T20 World Cup championship with a resounding 96-run victory over the New Zealand national cricket team in the final. The match took place at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where India's performance was nothing short of dominant. This victory also marked a historic milestone, making India the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title, underscoring their supremacy in the shortest format of the game.
Ponting Highlights India's Remarkable White-Ball Record
In an interview on the International Cricket Council's The ICC Review, Ponting emphasized India's impressive track record in recent ICC tournaments and their strong performance in white-ball cricket. He pointed out that the team's blend of talent, experience, and depth makes them an exceptionally challenging opponent to defeat.
"It's really hard to argue a point against that. If you look at this, not just the T20I team but their white-ball record in ICC events over the last five or six years, it's quite remarkable," Ponting stated. "A lot of people probably identified before this tournament started the depth and the strength that this current Indian team had, and also the experience that they have. This is a very, very strong Indian white-ball team, not just a T20 team. Back-to-back World Cups, hats off to them."
Experience and IPL Influence Key to Success
Ponting, who also serves as the head coach of the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League, believes that the players' extensive experience from both international cricket and the IPL has been instrumental in their ability to handle high-pressure situations effectively.
"The one thing that's probably overlooked with this current team is the amount of experience and the amount of cricket a lot of these guys have played, whether it's international cricket or even just the IPL," Ponting explained. "The IPL games are every bit as big as international games anyway, so this Indian team came in well primed with great balance and a great squad."
Learning from a Rare Defeat to Refocus
During the Super Eight stage, India experienced a rare defeat against the South Africa national cricket team. However, Ponting suggested that this loss may have served as a crucial wake-up call for the team, helping them refocus and strengthen their resolve.
"You win 12 matches on the trot, there's bound to be an off day. And I am glad it's come early. It might just be the shake-up India needed," he remarked. "They would have learned from that experience and won't take things for granted."
Following that setback, India demonstrated remarkable resilience, bouncing back with powerful batting displays. They scored over 250 runs in three consecutive matches, including both the semifinal and the final, showcasing their offensive prowess and determination.
"Maybe it just allowed them to regroup, get together and talk about the things that are important to them as a team," Ponting added. "They solidified what they felt was their strongest playing XI and didn't make many changes at the back end of the tournament."
India's Golden Period in Cricket
The victory in the T20 World Cup 2026 further cements what many are calling a golden period for Indian cricket, spanning from 2019 to 2026. This era has been characterized by consistent success across formats, with the team achieving multiple accolades and setting new benchmarks in the sport. Ponting's accolades underscore the global recognition of India's cricketing excellence and their status as a powerhouse in international cricket.
