Irfan Pathan Extols Jasprit Bumrah's Match-Winning Spell in T20 World Cup Semi-Final
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has heaped effusive praise on star pacer Jasprit Bumrah following his game-changing performance in India's nail-biting semi-final victory over England in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. The thrilling encounter unfolded at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, where Bumrah's brilliance under pressure proved decisive.
Pathan's Glowing Tribute to Bumrah's Unparalleled Talent
Speaking candidly on his YouTube channel, Pathan described Bumrah as a cricketing gem, emphasizing that India should consider itself extraordinarily fortunate to possess a bowler of his caliber. The ex-pacer underscored Bumrah's comprehensive skill set and his exceptional ability to deliver in high-stakes moments.
"I have spoken about Bumrah many times before and I will reiterate it now. We are incredibly lucky that a bowler like Jasprit Bumrah represents India. India has never witnessed a bowler of his ilk before. Perhaps the world has rarely seen such a complete fast bowler. He possesses every weapon in his arsenal: lethal yorkers, deceptive slower balls, precise outswing and inswing, and intimidating bouncers. Moreover, he excels at bowling under immense pressure," Pathan asserted on his platform.
The Crucial Match Context and Bumrah's Decisive Intervention
India had posted a formidable total of 253/7 after being asked to bat first, largely propelled by a blistering 42-ball 89 from Sanju Samson. However, England mounted a formidable chase, spearheaded by a superb century from Jacob Bethell. As the match reached its climax, England required 45 runs from the final three overs, keeping the contest alive.
It was then that Bumrah delivered a masterclass in death bowling during the 18th over. He conceded a mere six runs while executing four pinpoint yorkers, dramatically shifting momentum. Hardik Pandya then bowled an excellent penultimate over, yielding only nine runs and dismissing Sam Curran. England ultimately finished at 246/7, falling short by seven runs.
Earlier, Bumrah had also bowled a tight 16th over, giving away just eight runs and tightening India's grip during the critical closing stages.
Pathan's Strong Case for Bumrah as Player of the Match
Pathan firmly believed that Bumrah's effort warranted the Player of the Match award, especially given the batting-friendly conditions where runs flowed freely. He highlighted the pacer's economy rate in contrast to other bowlers who struggled.
"In my view, Jasprit Bumrah should have been named Player of the Match. If you observed the game closely, every other bowler had an economy rate hovering around 10, with some even exceeding 10 or nearing 15. On such a flat pitch where 500 runs were scored, the individual who performs the most challenging task under these conditions is the true Player of the Match. Bumrah consistently bowls the toughest overs," Pathan explained.
Bumrah's Tactical Acumen and Strategic Brilliance
Pathan also lauded Bumrah's cricketing intelligence, citing how the pacer outsmarted Harry Brook with clever variation rather than relying solely on pace.
"When he came to bowl, the first batter he confronted was Harry Brook. He did not attempt to bowl fast because he possesses a brilliant cricketing mind. He trapped Brook with a slower ball immediately. Bumrah could have opted for a yorker or a bouncer on the first delivery, playing on his ego with the thought, 'I am Jasprit Bumrah.' But he refrains from such approaches. He comprehends the pitch, the conditions, and reads the batter meticulously. He knew Brook relishes pace, so instead of providing it, he ensnared him with a slower delivery, leading to Axar Patel taking the catch," Pathan elaborated.
Supporting Acts and England's Valiant Chase
India's innings was anchored by Samson's explosive 89 off 42 balls, featuring eight fours and seven sixes. Valuable contributions also came from Shivam Dube (43 off 25), Ishan Kishan (39 off 18), Hardik Pandya (27 off 12), and Tilak Varma (21 off seven), enabling India to set a daunting target.
England, initially struggling at 95/4, were revived by Bethell's aggressive 105 off 48 balls, supported by a 77-run partnership with Will Jacks (35 off 20). A brief cameo from Jofra Archer, who smashed 19 runs off just four balls, nearly tilted the match in England's favor, but India held their nerve in the final moments.
India Advances to the Grand Finale
With this hard-fought victory, India secured a place in the tournament final, where they will face New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium on March 8. The team now aims to clinch another prestigious ICC title, with Bumrah's heroics serving as a cornerstone of their campaign.
