Pakistan Cricket Team Set to Drop Senior Stars After Disappointing India Defeat
In a significant shake-up, the Pakistan cricket team management is reportedly planning to exclude senior players Babar Azam and Shaheen Shah Afridi from the upcoming T20 World Cup fixture against Namibia. This decision comes in the wake of their underwhelming performance during the high-pressure clash against India in Colombo, as confirmed by a reliable source within the team management to PTI on Monday.
PCB Chairman Expresses Dissatisfaction with Team's Performance
According to the source, Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi conveyed his deep dissatisfaction with the team's 61-run defeat to India during a conversation with team manager Naved Akram Cheema. The source revealed that Naqvi left the Premadasa stadium early as it became evident Pakistan were heading for another loss to their arch-rivals.
Through a senior PCB official, Naqvi communicated to the manager that such lackluster displays in crucial matches were neither understandable nor acceptable. This stern message underscores the high expectations placed on the team in major tournaments.
Management Decides on Drastic Changes Following Dressing Room Address
The source further disclosed that head coach Mike Hesson addressed the squad in the dressing room, emphasizing that they had fallen short of their true capabilities. Following this, the management think tank held a late-night meeting and concluded that enough was enough.
They decided to bench Babar Azam and Shaheen Shah Afridi for the Namibia match on Wednesday, opting instead to try out Salman Mirza or Naseem Shah and Fakhar Zaman. If these changes yield positive results, it could effectively mark the end of Babar and Shaheen's World Cup campaign, as the management is also keen to test young talent Khawaja Nafay in the middle order.
Crucial Match Against Namibia for Super Eight Hopes
Pakistan cannot afford any misstep against Namibia if they hope to progress to the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup. The team had earlier secured victories over lower-ranked opponents USA and the Netherlands before suffering the heavy defeat to India.
This strategic move highlights the management's focus on performance and accountability, aiming to revitalize the squad's chances in the tournament.
