Noida International Airport (NIA) achieved a significant milestone on Tuesday by conducting its first full aircraft turnaround trial in collaboration with IndiGo. This exercise is a mandatory pre-launch readiness test required by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the aviation regulator, before commercial flights can commence on June 15.
Trial Details and Objectives
Shailendra Bhatia, the nodal officer for the airport, explained that the trial is part of the airport's operational readiness programme. The initiative aims to verify whether facilities, systems, staff, and equipment are fully prepared to handle live flight operations. During the trial, an IndiGo aircraft, designated as flight 6E 5601 from Delhi, executed two low passes over the runway at 9 am to validate approach procedures. The aircraft then touched down at 10 am and was subsequently parked on the apron. Ground crews performed the complete sequence of turnaround operations, including refuelling, baggage handling, and passenger boarding bridge functions. The aircraft departed for Delhi at 11:45 am.
Significance of the Turnaround Trial
This trial tested the airport's ability to turn around a commercial aircraft from landing to departure within a standard timeframe. Such a benchmark is a key requirement that regulators assess before granting clearance for any new airport to commence passenger operations. Successfully completing this trial brings Noida International Airport one step closer to its operational launch.
Expected Impact on Regional Air Travel
Once commercial services begin, Noida International Airport is expected to alleviate congestion at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. IndiGo has announced plans to operate flights to 16 cities from this airport. Additionally, Akasa Air has revealed daily nonstop flights to Bengaluru and Navi Mumbai starting June 16.
However, there has been a setback as Air India Express, originally one of NIA's three launch airlines, has indefinitely postponed its plans to operate from the airport. This decision comes amid mounting losses faced by the Tata-backed AI Group.
