Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that star forward Neymar is on track to return for the team's final FIFA World Cup group-stage match against Scotland on Wednesday in Miami Gardens. The 34-year-old has missed Brazil's first two tournament matches, including a 3-0 victory over Haiti on Saturday, as he continues his recovery from a right calf injury.
Injury Update and Recovery Plan
Providing an update on Neymar's fitness on Friday, Ancelotti stated that the striker will continue his rehabilitation over the coming days before rejoining full training with the squad. According to the coach, Neymar will complete an individual training session on Saturday and is expected to participate in full team training on Monday.
Ancelotti added that the forward will be available for Brazil's final Group C encounter against Scotland. "Neymar will be training tomorrow alone, and on Monday with the team. He will be available for the match against Scotland," Ancelotti said.
Neymar's Importance to Brazil
Neymar remains Brazil's all-time leading scorer, with 79 goals in 129 international appearances. His return would provide the Selecao with another experienced option as they aim to build momentum heading into the knockout stages. The 34-year-old has not yet taken part in full team training since joining the World Cup squad, having been sidelined due to a calf injury suffered while playing for Santos FC on May 17.
Medical tests conducted last Monday were designed to assess his recovery and determine when he could resume action. Neymar's selection in Brazil's World Cup squad had sparked debate in the country, given his ongoing recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee sustained during a World Cup qualifier in October 2023.
Brazil's World Cup Campaign So Far
Brazil began their World Cup campaign with a draw before defeating Haiti 3-0 in their second group-stage match. The Selecao will now look to finish the group phase on a high against Scotland. Scotland enter the match as underdogs, but several unexpected results have already occurred during the tournament. Brazil will aim to avoid any slip-up and secure a strong finish to the group stage.
Should Neymar return as expected, his experience, creativity, and goalscoring ability could provide Brazil with an important advantage as they pursue another successful World Cup campaign.
