Meg Lanning Named UP Warriorz Captain for WPL 2026 Season
Meg Lanning to Lead UP Warriorz in WPL 2026

In a major leadership overhaul, the UP Warriorz franchise has appointed Australian cricket icon Meg Lanning as their captain for the upcoming 2026 Women's Premier League (WPL) season. The announcement was made by the Capri Sports-owned franchise on Sunday, marking a strategic shift for the team.

From Delhi Capitals to UP Warriorz: A New Challenge

Lanning, a legendary figure in women's cricket, moves to the Warriorz after a highly successful stint leading the Delhi Capitals. She captained the Capitals for the first three seasons of the WPL, guiding them to the final on each occasion, though they finished as runners-up every time. The Warriorz secured her services for a significant sum of Rs 1.9 crore at the recent player auction.

The franchise stated that Lanning's appointment highlights their renewed focus on injecting experience and calmness into the leadership group as they embark on a new chapter. The Warriorz have undergone a significant revamp after a series of underwhelming finishes: they came third in the inaugural 2023 season, slipped to fourth in 2024, and finished at the bottom in fifth place in 2025.

Lanning's Pedigree and Vision for the Team

Meg Lanning brings an unparalleled trophy cabinet to her new role. As an Australian player, she is a seven-time World Cup winner, having lifted the ODI World Cup twice and the T20 World Cup on five occasions. Her winning mentality is expected to be a game-changer for the UP-based side.

Expressing her excitement about the new challenge, Lanning said, "As the WPL enters its fourth season, it's been incredible to see how the league has evolved. The quality of cricket, the competitiveness, and the emergence of exciting new talent continue to raise the standard each year." She added, "This is a talented group with a strong mix of international experience and Indian players, and I'm really looking forward to the challenge ahead."

Coach Abhishek Nayar on the Leadership Boost

The franchise's new head coach, former India player and assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, was effusive in his praise for the new skipper. He emphasized the unique qualities she brings to the table. "Meg brings a rare combination of experience, clarity, and calmness that sets her apart as a leader," Nayar stated, underscoring the strategic thinking behind her appointment.

The 2026 WPL season is scheduled to begin on January 9. The tournament will be played across two venues this year. The first leg will be held in Navi Mumbai from January 9 to 17, followed by the second phase in Vadodara from January 19 to February 5. All eyes will now be on Lanning and the revamped UP Warriorz as they aim to climb the standings and mount a serious title challenge.
