From Injury Despair to IPL Glory: How McGrath & Aaron Rescued Praful Hinge's Career
When a cricketing career teeters on the brink of collapse, it often requires more than raw talent to persevere. It demands unwavering belief from those who have navigated similar storms. For young Vidarbha and Sunrisers Hyderabad seamer Praful Hinge, that lifeline came from two pivotal figures: Australian legend Glenn McGrath and former India pacer Varun Aaron, whose interventions turned a potential tragedy into a triumphant IPL debut.
A Dream Debut Amidst Adversity
In a spectacular display at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, Praful Hingle made his Indian Premier League debut unforgettable. Facing the unbeaten Rajasthan Royals during their 217-run chase, Hingle decimated the top order, reducing the opposition to 1/3 in his very first over. His victims included Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Dhruv Jurel, and debutant Lhuan-dre Pretorius. In his second over, he dismissed Royals captain Riyan Parag, finishing with remarkable figures of 4-0-34-4.
This moment of glory was nearly extinguished two-and-a-half years ago when Hingle suffered a career-threatening back injury. At that critical juncture, when his future in cricket seemed bleak, Varun Aaron stepped in as a guiding force, followed by Glenn McGrath's mentorship, setting the stage for this remarkable comeback.
The Pillars of Support: Aaron and McGrath
Sunrisers Hyderabad bowling coach Varun Aaron, who has battled his own share of injuries, was seen enthusiastically celebrating Hingle's success from the dugout. Prakash Hingle, Praful's father, expressed immense gratitude, stating, "Varun Aaron came like an angel in Praful's career. When Praful had a stress fracture, we all thought his cricket was over, but Varun took him under his wing and helped him recover. He literally hand-held him through that dark phase."
Following his recovery, Glenn McGrath, Director of Coaching at the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai, recognized Hingle's potential and invited him to Australia. Praful trained for three weeks at Cricket Australia's National Cricket Centre in Brisbane, with all expenses covered by the MRF Pace Foundation. "Glenn McGrath, who was impressed by his line and length, took him to Brisbane. We did not have to pay a single penny," added Prakash Hingle.
Recognition of Talent and Hard Work
Former Vidarbha cricketer Ranjit Paradkar, who coached Praful at the U-16 and U-23 levels, highlighted the youngster's inherent talent. "It was all about the opportunity. After playing age-group cricket for your state, if you have not represented India U-19, you need someone to push you, and in Praful's case it was Varun. The boy has also worked really hard. The stress fracture has made him a better bowler," Paradkar noted.
He also pointed out technical improvements made under Aaron's guidance, including tweaks in run-up, action, and follow-through. Additionally, Paradkar mentioned the heartwarming aspect of Harsh Dubey, Praful's captain during the U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy, now playing alongside him in the same franchise.
A Father's Pride and a Son's Determination
Prakash Hingle, recently retired from the Maharashtra State Electricity Board, now finds himself fielding congratulatory calls and guests at his Nagpur home. He credits his son's stubborn determination for this success. "I was a government employee, and my daughter is a chartered accountant. For us, education was everything, but this boy, right from a young age, was crazy about cricket. He would play gully cricket all day. We were forced to enroll him in an academy, and from then on, he made the ground his home," he shared, expressing no regrets about supporting Praful's cricketing aspirations.
