MCA Pioneers Annual Contracts for Domestic Cricketers in India

In a landmark move for Indian cricket, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has decided to award annual contracts to its domestic players, effective from the 2026-2027 season onwards. This initiative specifically targets cricketers who have not played for the Indian national team and are not participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL), aiming to provide them with much-needed financial stability and structured support.

Gradation System and Remuneration Details

Following a proposal passed in the MCA's recent Apex Council meeting, the association will implement a gradation system similar to that used by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Players will be divided into three grades—A, B, and C—with corresponding annual salaries:

  • Grade A: Players will receive between 12 lakh to 20 lakh rupees per annum.
  • Grade B: Cricketers will be paid between 8 lakh to 12 lakh rupees annually.
  • Grade C: Players will get 8 lakh rupees per year.

This structured approach ensures that remuneration is based on performance and potential, making the MCA the first cricket association in India to introduce such a contract system for its players.

Eligibility Criteria for Contract Awards

To qualify for these contracts, players must meet five specific requirements set by the MCA:

  1. The player should be registered with the Mumbai Cricket Association.
  2. The player must meet the minimum fitness benchmarks established by the MCA.
  3. The player should not have represented the Indian team in any format in the past two seasons.
  4. The player should not be selected by an IPL team in the past two IPL seasons.
  5. The player must be recommended by the MCA selection committee.

These criteria ensure that the contracts are awarded to emerging talent who are dedicated to domestic cricket and in need of financial support.

Background and Previous Initiatives

This announcement builds on earlier efforts by the MCA to support its players. On March 23, 2024, the association announced a 100% pay raise for Ranji Trophy players to incentivize red-ball cricket, matching the match fees paid by the BCCI starting from the 2024-25 domestic season. Then, on June 14, 2024, the MCA revealed plans to introduce central contracts, which have now materialized into this gradation system.

The concept was initially proposed in 2022, when the association decided to create a graded contract system and tasked the Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) with working out the operational details. After thorough planning, the scheme has finally been rolled out, marking a significant step forward in player welfare.

Leadership Perspective on the Initiative

MCA president Ajinkya Naik expressed pride in this progressive step, stating, "This initiative marks a new era for Mumbai cricket. We are proud to be the first association to implement a player contract system—a progressive step that will provide greater security, structure, and growth opportunities for our Mumbai players." His comments highlight the association's commitment to nurturing local talent and ensuring a sustainable future for cricket in the region.

By introducing these contracts, the MCA not only addresses financial concerns but also aims to foster a more professional environment for domestic cricketers, encouraging them to focus on their game without economic pressures. This move is expected to set a precedent for other cricket associations across India, potentially leading to broader reforms in domestic cricket support systems.
