Mumbai Cricket Association to Unveil Tributes to Four Cricketing Icons at Wankhede Stadium
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is set to honor four legendary figures of Mumbai and Indian cricket with a special ceremony at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, April 9. The event will feature the unveiling of the Ravi Shastri Stand and the dedication of stadium gates to Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar, and Diana Edulji, recognizing their indelible contributions to the sport.
Ceremony to Be Attended by Dignitaries and Cricket Fraternity
The unveiling ceremony will be graced by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, alongside MCA President Ajinkya Naik, Apex Council members, office bearers, and prominent figures from the cricketing community. This decision to honor these stalwarts was formally approved by the MCA Apex Council during its meeting in February, underscoring the association's commitment to preserving cricket heritage.
Details of the Honors and Tributes
As part of this initiative, the Level 1 Stand located below the Press Box at Wankhede Stadium will be officially named after former India captain and renowned commentator Ravi Shastri. This tribute acknowledges his multifaceted contributions as a player, leader, and coach to both Mumbai and Indian cricket.
In addition, three stadium gates will be dedicated to other Mumbai legends:
- Gate No. 3 will be unveiled as the Dilip Sardesai Gate.
- Gate No. 5 will be named the Diana Edulji Gate.
- Gate No. 6 will be designated the Eknath Solkar Gate.
These dedications pay homage to stalwarts who have left a lasting impact on Indian cricket through their exceptional performances and dedication.

Profiles of the Honored Legends
Ravi Shastri enjoyed a distinguished playing career, featuring in 80 Tests and 150 ODIs for India, where he scored 6,938 runs, including 15 centuries, and took 280 wickets in international cricket. He was a key member of India's 1983 World Cup-winning team and the 1985 Champions of Champions triumph. Post-retirement, Shastri transitioned to commentary and served as the crisis manager for the BCCI, eventually becoming the head coach of the senior national men's team after a stint as team director in 2014-15.
Diana Edulji, a left-arm spinner, claimed 109 wickets in 54 international matches, comprising 20 Women's Tests and 34 Women's ODIs. At 69 years old, she also made significant administrative contributions as a member of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) running the BCCI in 2018-19. During her tenure, Edulji implemented numerous measures to promote women's cricket and enhance facilities for the Indian women's cricket team.
Eknath Solkar was renowned for his acrobatic fielding at short leg, earning a reputation as one of India's finest fielders. His agility and commitment on the field made him a standout player in Indian cricket history.
Dilip Sardesai, often regarded as Indian cricket's 'Renaissance Man,' played a pivotal role in India's historic 1971 West Indies tour, amassing 642 runs with three centuries, including a top score of 212. He also scored 54 and 40 in India's Oval Test victory against the West Indies that same year. Over a celebrated career spanning 30 Tests, Sardesai scored 2,001 runs at an average of 39.23, with five centuries and nine fifties. He was the first Indian batsman to score a double hundred at the Brabourne Stadium, achieving 200 not out against New Zealand in the 1965-66 Test, which helped India draw the match after following on.
