Mumbai Cricket Association Takes Historic Step with Central Contracts for Domestic Players
The Mumbai Cricket Association has made a groundbreaking decision. During its Apex Council meeting on Wednesday, the MCA approved central contracts for Mumbai's domestic cricketers. This new system will start from the 2026-27 season.
Financial Security for Local Talent
The MCA now joins a select group of state associations in India. While the BCCI has long provided central contracts to national team players, the MCA is extending similar benefits to its own domestic squad. This initiative specifically targets players who do not represent India or participate in the Indian Premier League.
A source within the MCA confirmed the details to TOI. "The MCA's central contracts will go exclusively to domestic players, not those playing for India or in the IPL," the source said. "We expect to award contracts to around 15-20 Mumbai cricketers. The senior selection committee will finalize all contract details before the next domestic season."
Building on Previous Support Measures
This move continues the MCA's recent efforts to strengthen domestic cricket infrastructure. On March 23, 2024, the association announced a significant 100% pay increase for Ranji Trophy players. That decision ensures Mumbai's Ranji players receive match fees equal to BCCI payments, in addition to existing BCCI compensation, starting from the 2024-25 season.
Interestingly, the concept of central contracts is not entirely new for the MCA. Former president Vijay Patil first proposed the idea on June 29, 2022, following an Apex Council meeting. The plan aimed to introduce contracts for the 2022-23 season but remained pending for nearly three years before receiving final approval now.
New Tournament Honors Cricket Legend
In another significant development, the MCA announced the creation of an Inter-College cricket tournament. This competition will bear the name of former India and Mumbai captain Dilip Vengsarkar.
MCA president Ajinkya Naik explained the association's vision. "We want to build a strong pathway from college cricket to the highest levels of the game," Naik stated. "Naming the tournament after Dilip Vengsarkar reflects the excellence and leadership qualities we want young cricketers to emulate. Central contracts provide players with stability and confidence, while our new T20 scouting tournament will help Mumbai identify and nurture talent for the future."
The MCA emphasized the tournament's importance. "This event celebrates excellence, leadership, and Mumbai cricket's enduring legacy," the association noted. "It will serve as a crucial platform for developing young talent at the collegiate level."
Vengsarkar, who previously served as India's chief selector, had criticized Mumbai University for what he called "poor handling of the inter-collegiate cricket tournament." He had urged the MCA to take control of the event, which the association has now done.
Focus on T20 Talent Development
The MCA also revealed plans for a dedicated T20 Scouting Tournament. This new competition will serve as a specialized platform for identifying talent for the T20 Mumbai League.
"Modern cricket demands new approaches," the MCA explained. "Our T20 tournament will create a clear, merit-based pathway for young players to reach elite competitive levels. It aligns with the evolving nature of the game."
These announcements represent a comprehensive strategy by the Mumbai Cricket Association. The central contracts provide financial assurance to domestic players. The Vengsarkar-named college tournament strengthens grassroots development. The T20 scouting competition addresses format-specific talent needs. Together, they aim to secure Mumbai's position as a powerhouse in Indian cricket for years to come.
