For Dallas owner and general manager Jerry Jones, the situation is not as simple as revisiting old trade talks. The Cowboys have already committed to a plan while rebuilding a defense that struggled badly last season. Still, when a player of Crosby’s caliber becomes available again, even briefly, the question naturally resurfaces across NFL circles. Could Dallas reconsider a move it once explored?
The Maxx Crosby trade saga took a dramatic turn last week. The Raiders initially agreed to send the five-time Pro Bowl edge rusher to Baltimore for two first-round picks, a blockbuster deal that shook the league. That sudden reversal placed several teams back on alert, including Dallas. The Cowboys were widely viewed as a strong alternative before Baltimore stepped in. Still, Jones suggested the team has largely moved forward.
"We’re pretty far down the road relative to what our plans are," Jones told the Associated Press. "So while I don’t anticipate it, I don’t want to rule anything out." That cautious wording left a small window open, though the Cowboys’ actions suggest a different direction.
Dallas Cowboys Make Strategic Moves on Defense
Earlier this week, Dallas acquired pass rusher Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers for a 2027 fourth-round pick. The move provided help off the edge without requiring the massive draft capital Crosby once commanded. Dallas has also moved several pieces along the defensive front.
Defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa was sent to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2026 third-round pick, while veteran lineman Solomon Thomas was dealt to the Tennessee Titans in a late-round pick swap. The flurry of moves reflects an effort to reset a defense that ranked among the franchise’s worst last season.
Dallas has also added safety Jalen Thompson, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals, one of the few notable additions during a relatively quiet free agency period. Jones remains confident the roster will respond.
"I feel very good about it," Jones said. "We have nowhere but up to go on defense. That’s not anyone’s fault at all. But we’re going to almost assuredly be much better. And I’m betting on us improving on offense. That ought to get us with a better feeling when we get into December."
