Smriti Mandhana Delivers Masterclass in WPL Final Despite Battling Severe Illness

Smriti Mandhana once again demonstrated why she operates in a distinct class of her own. Her trademark composure and ability to conceal pressure behind an aura of effortless calm were on spectacular display during a historic Thursday night at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara. The left-handed dynamo unleashed a devastating innings of 87 runs from just 41 deliveries, single-handedly steering the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to a commanding six-wicket triumph over the Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) championship match. This monumental victory secured RCB's second WPL title, cementing their legacy in the tournament.

A Captain's Grit Through Adversity

What made Mandhana's performance truly extraordinary was the significant physical challenge she overcame. The Indian batting star was grappling with a severe case of flu, complete with a high fever, yet she adamantly refused to let it impede her mission. As captain, she led from the front, ensuring that no personal discomfort could derail the team's pursuit of the coveted trophy.

RCB head coach Malolan Rangarajan was effusive in his praise, labeling the knock as one of Mandhana's finest and shedding light on the gravity of her condition. He emphasized her incredible resilience, noting she played through the illness without ever allowing it to diminish her impact on the game.

"Smriti saved one of her best innings for the final. The reason why I say that is, yes, she has been in very good form in the last 12 months, but the way she batted in the final was inhuman. It was so classy, so elegant. It didn’t look like a chase that was 200 the way she batted," Rangarajan stated.

"Smriti was unwell with a high fever, but she did not even show it. That’s the person she is. When I spoke to her this afternoon, she said, ‘No problem, I will be there.’ So, that’s her when it comes to her work," the coach added, highlighting her unwavering professionalism.

Season-Long Excellence Culminates in Orange Cap

Mandhana's heroic final was the crowning achievement of a spectacular individual season. Her consistent brilliance throughout the tournament was formally recognized as she claimed the prestigious Orange Cap for the first time in her career. She concluded the WPL season with a formidable tally of 377 runs across nine innings, underscoring her status as one of the premier batters in women's cricket.

The victory not only brought glory to RCB but also served as a powerful testament to Mandhana's leadership, skill, and indomitable spirit. Her ability to perform at the highest level under physical duress has set a new benchmark for athletic dedication and excellence in the sport.
