Joy and pride swept through Ludhiana as all-rounder Nikhil Chaudhary, born in Delhi and raised in the city, made his T20 international debut for the senior Australian men's cricket team in the ongoing series against Bangladesh. The 30-year-old became the first India-born male cricketer to represent Australia in more than six decades.
Family and Community Celebrate Milestone
Nikhil's family members and fellow cricketers celebrated the achievement, describing it as the culmination of years of hard work, perseverance and self-belief. His father, Sneh Kumar Chaudhary, expressed immense pride. "It is a proud moment, not only for our family but for the entire Ludhiana. Nikhil remained focussed on his goal despite facing several challenges after moving to Australia. Seeing him wear the Australian colours is a dream come true for all of us," he said.
Debut Performance and Impact
In the first match of the series, played on June 17, 2026, Nikhil claimed his maiden international wicket and scored 18 runs off 13 balls, helping Australia register a four-wicket victory over Bangladesh. His all-round performance drew praise from teammates and fans alike.
Journey from Punjab to Australia
Nikhil honed his cricketing skills in Punjab's competitive circuit and represented the state in domestic cricket. However, with limited opportunities, he moved to Australia in 2020 in search of a fresh start. Far from the spotlight, he balanced cricket with odd jobs and played club games, determined to keep his dream alive. His performances eventually earned him a contract with Tasmania and later with the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League.
Inspiration for Young Cricketers
City cricketers, including Ranji Trophy players Geetansh Khera and Jaish Jain, hailed Nikhil's rise as an inspiration for young cricketers facing setbacks. They noted that his achievement is a matter of pride for the cricket fraternity, particularly in Ludhiana, where he learned the basics of the game. Former teammates celebrated his debut, emphasizing that hard work and self-belief can overcome any obstacle.
