The Los Angeles Lakers have surprised many by taking a 2-0 lead in their first-round playoff series against the Houston Rockets. Now, they prepare for a crucial Game 3 matchup. Without Luka Doncic, their leading scorer, the Lakers have had to adjust. Many thought the short-handed No. 4 seed was doomed, but back-to-back outstanding games from Luke Kennard and age-defying contributions from LeBron James have put Los Angeles just two wins away from the Western Conference semifinals.
Lakers Aim to Take Control in Game 3
Although they don't exactly need to win Game 3, Los Angeles wants a commanding 3-0 lead given their short-handed status. Naturally, the Rockets aim to avoid that by reviving their offense. Without superstar Kevin Durant, they shot only 38% in Game 1, and their performance didn't improve with him. In Game 2, Houston scored just 94 points on 40% shooting. Durant did score 23 points in his return.
Unfortunately for the Lakers, Doncic has been ruled out for Game 3 on Friday night. ESPN's Shams Charania provided an update: Doncic isn't expected to play in this series against the Rockets. That's a setback for Los Angeles, but with a 2-0 lead and home-court advantage secured, all focus is on them. Reaves might return if the series extends to six or seven games. Shams notes that Reaves is closer to a comeback than Doncic. The ideal scenario for Los Angeles is to win either Game 3 or Game 4 and finish the series in Game 5 back in Los Angeles.
Lakers in Control Despite Adversity
If Los Angeles had lost either of their first two games, the pressure would be much higher heading into Friday. But not having Doncic isn't the end of the world, as the Lakers have total control and need just one road victory to feel secure about closing out the series. The ultimate goal is to defeat the Rockets easily in the first round, giving Doncic ample time to recover. So far, the Lakers are following the plan, and it's paying off.
