Anil Kumble Cautions Against Rushing Teen Prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Into Indian Team
MUMBAI: The cricketing world is abuzz with excitement over Bihar's teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose explosive batting for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026 has captured widespread attention. However, legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble has issued a prudent warning, urging selectors not to hasten the 15-year-old's entry into the national squad despite his undeniable talent.
Kumble Draws Parallels to Sachin Tendulkar's Early Days
Speaking at a Barclays event held at the Cricket Club of India on Friday, Kumble, a former India captain and head coach, acknowledged the extraordinary promise shown by Sooryavanshi. He likened the current fervor surrounding the young batsman to the early career of Sachin Tendulkar, who also demonstrated remarkable skill as a teenager. "Sachin Tendulkar, every time he walked out as a 14-or 15-year-old, he was scoring hundreds. From what we've seen, Vaibhav is certainly doing all the right things," Kumble remarked.
Despite these comparisons, Kumble emphasized that each player's journey is distinct and that imposing premature expectations could place an undue burden on Sooryavanshi. "But at this point, it's a lot of pressure on a young lad to say, 'we want you to play for India in two months' time.' It may happen, it may not but he has time on his side. Even 10 years later, he'll only be 25, and that's the best part about someone doing so well at 15," he added, highlighting the advantage of youth in Sooryavanshi's favor.
Selectors Monitoring Closely, But Timing Is Key
Kumble expressed confidence that Sooryavanshi will eventually represent India, but stressed that the timing should be carefully considered. "I'm sure there will be a time when he will play for India. Whether it's fast-tracked or not, every player has his own journey. Some start at 15, some at 28 but they all have a role to play. For Vaibhav, it could be this year, next year or a couple of years later. But the way he is batting, he will certainly be someone the selectors will be watching closely," he stated.
This cautious approach underscores Kumble's belief in allowing natural progression rather than succumbing to the hype. He noted that while Sooryavanshi's fearless strokeplay has made him a standout in the IPL, rushing his international debut could hinder his long-term development.
Balancing Academics and Elite Sport: A Daunting Challenge
Sooryavanshi recently made headlines for skipping his Class X board exams to focus on IPL preparations, a decision that Kumble addressed with understanding. "That is the biggest challenge. If a 15-year-old is smashing every bowler in the world, it's very difficult to ask him to go to university and study before selecting him. That's the reality," the former captain explained, acknowledging the tough choices faced by prodigious talents in juggling education and professional sports.
Kumble also commented on the evolving pathways in cricket, suggesting that traditional routes like inter-university and inter-school competitions may no longer hold the same relevance. "I didn't play for a university, though I was part of the system. Interuniversity cricket was once significant but I don't see it returning," he added, pointing to the shifting landscape where tournaments like the IPL are becoming crucial platforms for young players.
In summary, while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's rapid rise in IPL 2026 has sparked hopes of an imminent India call-up, Anil Kumble's advice champions patience and a measured approach. His insights remind fans and selectors alike that nurturing talent over time, rather than rushing it, is key to building a sustainable career in international cricket.
