Kotak Dismisses Rumours: Kohli, Rohit in Constant Talks with Gambhir on ODI Plans
Kotak: Kohli, Rohit Regularly Discuss ODI Plans with Gambhir

Batting Coach Kotak Strongly Denies Miscommunication Rumours Involving Kohli and Rohit

India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has firmly dismissed swirling rumours about any lack of communication between the team management and senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. He stressed that both stalwarts are in regular and productive discussions with head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Regular Discussions Focus on ODI Strategy and Future Plans

"I always see Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma talking with Gautam Gambhir," Kotak stated clearly. "They discuss ODI formats, the matches we have, and our plans going ahead, especially looking towards the South Africa World Cup in 2027."

Kotak mentioned he is often present during these conversations. "Most of the time I'm there, and if I'm listening, they definitely share their vast experience. I always see them engaged in talk. Obviously, on social media, you see a lot of things which I try to avoid seeing," he added with a quip.

Rumours Emerged After Leadership and Retirement Changes

Speculation about indifference began circulating after several high-profile changes:

  • Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket.
  • Shubman Gill replaced Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain.
  • Both Kohli and Rohit retired from T20 Internationals after India's triumphant 2024 T20 World Cup victory.

Reports had suggested the board summoned a meeting to address communication issues between senior players and selectors during the South Africa series. However, Kotak emphasized that the senior players and team management are completely aligned.

Kotak Praises Duo's Professionalism and Planning

"They are thorough professionals," Kotak asserted. "I don't think they need to be told what to do. In fact, with the immense experience they possess, they can share a lot of ideas with other players, and they do discuss these things."

He revealed that both Kohli and Rohit have discussed their future plans with Coach Gambhir. "Both of them are so senior and experienced. They definitely make detailed plans. They want to practice at all venues. If they feel the need, they'll go a couple of days in advance. They practice diligently because they have been such outstanding players for India," Kotak explained.

He continued without pause, "Their planning is brilliant. They know exactly what they need to do. They understand what their bodies require, not just for batting, but for fitness and all other requirements."

Future Remains Unclear, But Form is Exceptional

The team management has not made any official public statement regarding the future roles of Kohli and Rohit. The selection committee is also not rushing any decisions.

Meanwhile, both players are in exceptional form. Since the South Africa series:

  1. Virat Kohli has scored two centuries and three fifty-plus scores, twice remaining unbeaten. He boasts an impressive record at the current ground, with 226 runs at an average of 56.50 in four games. He has been batting with a free spirit, visibly enjoying his time at the crease.
  2. While big scores have eluded him recently, Rohit Sharma has also looked in delightful touch and good nick.

Team News: Nitish Reddy a Potential Replacement

In other team news, the Indian management might consider Nitish Reddy as a replacement for the injured Washington Sundar. Sundar was ruled out due to a rib injury sustained during the first ODI in Vadodara.

Reddy is a strong candidate because the team clearly wants someone who can chip in with a few overs alongside the specialist bowlers. This is particularly valuable on a high-scoring ground like the SCA Stadium in Rajkot.
