Virat Kohli's 131 & Record 16,000 List A Runs Power Delhi to Vijay Hazare Win
Kohli's 131 leads Delhi to Vijay Hazare Trophy win

In a spectacular return to domestic cricket, Virat Kohli delivered a batting masterclass to steer Delhi to a thrilling four-wicket victory over Andhra in their opening Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 encounter in Bengaluru on Wednesday. The former India captain's magnificent century was the cornerstone of a successful chase of 299 runs, achieved with more than 12 overs to spare.

Andhra Post Formidable Total Despite Simarjeet's Five-Wicket Haul

Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, Delhi faced stiff resistance from Andhra's batters. The foundation was laid by a superb century from Ricky Bhui, who smashed 122 runs off just 105 deliveries. His innings, featuring 11 fours and seven sixes, provided stability after early setbacks. Useful contributions from Nitish Reddy (23), Maramreddy Hemanth Reddy (27), and Singupuram Prasad (28) towards the end propelled Andhra to a competitive total of 298 for 8 in their 50 overs.

For Delhi, the bowling honours were seized by Simarjeet Singh, who emerged as the chief wicket-taker with an impressive five-wicket haul. His spell was crucial in breaking key partnerships. He received solid support from Prince Yadav, who chipped in with three wickets.

Kohli's Commanding Chase and Historic Milestone

The chase of 299 began explosively for Delhi, thanks to young opener Priyansh Arya. His aggressive 74 off 44 balls put Andhra on the back foot from the outset. Once Arya departed, Virat Kohli took centre stage, showcasing his enduring class in the 50-over format.

Kohli, playing with calm authority, paced his innings to perfection. He found gaps with ease and punished loose deliveries, compiling a magnificent 131 runs from 101 balls, which included 14 boundaries and three sixes. During this knock, the 37-year-old achieved a monumental personal milestone, surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar to become the fastest player to reach 16,000 List A runs. Kohli reached the landmark in his 330th innings, while Tendulkar had taken 391.

Match-Winning Partnership Seals the Deal

Kohli found an able ally in Nitish Rana, who played a fearless and rapid counter-attacking innings. Rana's blistering 77 off 55 balls ensured the required run rate never climbed. Together, the duo constructed a massive, match-winning partnership that took Delhi to the brink of victory.

Although Delhi lost a few quick wickets in the closing stages, the hard work was already done. The team crossed the finish line in just 37.4 overs, with Harsh Tyagi and Navdeep Saini at the crease. The comprehensive win, built on Kohli's brilliance, gives Delhi a perfect start to their Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign.
