Jurrien Timber will not participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the Netherlands confirmed that the Arsenal defender has not sufficiently recovered from a groin injury. This decision ends any hope of the 24-year-old featuring for his country in the tournament, but it could prove beneficial for Arsenal ahead of the new season.
Injury Struggles and Champions League Appearance
Timber has been grappling with the injury since the March international break. Despite the setback, he pushed hard to return and managed to feature in Arsenal's UEFA Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. He came off the bench in Budapest, playing 54 minutes after replacing Cristhian Mosquera, showing signs of nearing full fitness.
World Cup Hopes Dashed
After that match, Timber joined Ronald Koeman's Netherlands squad for the World Cup. However, he missed the friendly loss to Algeria due to ongoing fitness concerns. On Monday, the Dutch national team confirmed his departure from the squad, ruling him out of the tournament.
The Netherlands posted on X: "Jurrien Timber misses the 2026 World Cup. The 24-year-old defender has not recovered sufficiently from a groin injury to take part in the World Cup in a medically responsible manner. In consultation with the medical staff, it has therefore been decided that Timber will leave the national team's pre-camp in New York after the game against Uzbekistan. We're with you, Jurrien."
Replacement and Impact on Netherlands
With Timber withdrawing, Ronald Koeman was permitted to call up a replacement. He selected Lutsharel Geertruida, who had initially been left out despite an impressive season. Geertruida will now compete with Denzel Dumfries and Mats Wieffer for a place on the right side of the Dutch defense. He can also provide cover in central defense alongside Virgil van Dijk, Micky van de Ven, and Jan Paul van Hecke.
For the Netherlands, losing Timber is a major setback. The Arsenal defender has become one of the team's most reliable players, capable of playing in several positions across the back line.
Silver Lining for Arsenal
For Arsenal, the situation looks very different. Timber was already carrying a serious injury, and a demanding World Cup schedule could have exacerbated the problem. Instead of playing through pain during a long tournament, he can now focus completely on recovery.
This gives Mikel Arteta a much better chance of having a fresh and fully fit Timber available when Arsenal begin preparations for the new campaign. While the defender will be disappointed to miss the biggest tournament in football, Arsenal may benefit from the extra recovery time in the months ahead.
