The Jammu and Kashmir Police have initiated an inquiry after a local cricketer sparked a political controversy by sporting a helmet marked with a Palestine flag during a private tournament match in Jammu. The incident occurred on Wednesday during a J&K Champions League game between JK11 Kings and Jammu Trailblazers.
Cricketer and Organiser Called for Questioning
Acting on the viral videos from the match, the police summoned the cricketer, identified as Furqan Bhat, who bats in the middle order. In addition, the tournament organiser, Zahid Bhat, was also called to the Domana police station for detailed questioning. The authorities are investigating whether the act of displaying the foreign flag was premeditated and why the organisers failed to enforce guidelines regarding symbols and conduct during the sporting event.
Official statements confirm that a preliminary enquiry has been ordered under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. This enquiry must be completed within a period of 14 days. It is crucial to note that while the investigation is active, no First Information Report (FIR) has been registered yet in the case.
Public Outcry and Police Investigation
The video of Furqan Bhat wearing the helmet quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing sharp criticism from various sections of society. Many online users labelled the act as deliberate and provocative, arguing that a cricket field is not an appropriate platform for displaying symbols related to foreign political causes, especially in a region with a sensitive security context like Jammu and Kashmir.
Senior police officials stated that they are verifying all facts surrounding the incident. The probe aims to ascertain the circumstances under which the display was allowed, whether any necessary permissions were obtained, and if the act could potentially disturb public order or hurt national sentiment. No formal action has been taken against the individuals so far, as the investigation is still in its preliminary stages.
J&K Cricket Association Distances Itself
Amid the growing controversy, the J&K Cricket Association (JKCA) has firmly denied any association with the tournament in question. An official from the association clarified that the J&K Champions League is a privately organised event and is not affiliated with the JKCA or any national or international cricket governing body.
The association emphasised that the league operates without its recognition, authority, or supervision, thereby distancing itself completely from the incident and the ensuing political debate.
