Jemimah Rodrigues stresses aggressive intent vs Australia

Jemimah Rodrigues has emphasized the need for aggressive intent when India faces Australia in their final ICC Women's T20 World Cup league stage match at Lord's on Sunday. The result will determine India's semifinal berth.

Match context and standings

India currently sits second in the points table with three wins and one loss, accumulating six points. South Africa trails at third with the same record but faces Bangladesh, a weaker opponent. India, however, must contend with six-time T20 World Cup champions Australia.

Jemimah's message: attack is the only way

Speaking on JioStar's 'Champions Huddle', Jemimah said: "The thing about Australia is that they never let you settle. They are always attacking, always putting pressure. If you want to do well against them, you can't be defensive. You must dominate and take the game to them, and our team enjoys that challenge."

Jemimah herself has a storied history against Australia, having scored an unbeaten 127 off 134 balls in the 2025 ICC Women's World Cup semifinal to chase down a record 339. However, in the ongoing T20 World Cup, she has managed only 58 runs in four innings, with a top score of 26.

Players with strong records against Australia

Jemimah highlighted Shafali Verma's T20I record against Australia: 493 runs in 23 innings at a strike rate above 140, including two fifties. Pacer Renuka Thakur has taken 16 wickets in 18 T20Is against Australia at an average of 29.93, including a four-wicket haul. "Shafali Verma has played a lot against them. Renuka has also bowled well against Australia in the past. Most of our players have good experience against them," Jemimah added.

Execution and mindset

"But on the day, it all comes down to execution. We just need to go out there, back ourselves, and play with that aggressive intent. If we do that, I think everything will fall into place," she said.

Coach Amol Muzumdar on team transformation

Head coach Amol Muzumdar reflected on his tenure since October 2023, noting the team needed a "shake up, a change in mindset, approach and attitude." He introduced new systems and roles, challenging players to take more responsibility. "The results on the field are there for everyone to see. This Indian women's team is very different from what it was two years ago," he said.

Muzumdar acknowledged Australia's strength but pointed to India's 2-1 T20 series win in Australia—the first time India has beaten Australia in a T20 series. "That win gave us a lot of belief. We can take confidence from that and prepare ourselves well for the World Cup clash," he concluded.
