Star Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues recently recounted a frightening yet amusing anecdote from her childhood, an incident that occurred long before she became a cricketing sensation for the nation.
A Mischievous Game Gone Wrong
The event took place when Rodrigues was merely eight years old. She was attending a church program with her cousins in an auditorium. While the adults were occupied inside, the children, brimming with energy, were playing outside.
Their game of choice was a playful "chappal fight," where they would throw footwear like slippers and Crocs at each other. Speaking on the popular show Breakfast With Champions, Jemimah narrated how the fun took a dangerous turn.
"My cousin threw her crocs and it was like you had to jump the other side to get it," she explained. Displaying a brave front, the young Jemimah volunteered to retrieve the shoe herself.
The Terrifying Fall and Lucky Escape
What happened next sent shockwaves through her family. "I, like a full hero, said that I would get it. I fell from the first floor," Rodrigues revealed. In a stroke of incredible luck, she landed on a person sitting below, cushioning her fall.
"Luckily, someone was sitting down, and I fell on her head. My cousins thought I died," she added, describing the panic she caused. Miraculously, the future cricketer escaped completely unharmed, turning a potential tragedy into a family story that is now recalled with a mix of horror and humour.
From Playful Kid to National Hero
Today, Jemimah Rodrigues's life is a world apart from those childhood escapades. The year 2025 has been a dream for her, marked by phenomenal achievements on the cricket field.
She played a pivotal role in India's historic ICC Women's World Cup victory. Her magnificent, unbeaten knock of 127 runs against Australia in the semi-final is widely regarded as one of the tournament's finest innings.
Adding another feather to her cap, Rodrigues was recently appointed as the new captain of the Delhi Capitals for the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026 season. Expressing her gratitude, she stated, "It is an absolute honour to be named captain of the Delhi Capitals, and I am deeply grateful to the owners and the support staff for placing their faith in me to lead this team."
"It has truly been a dream year for me and my family, winning the World Cup and now being entrusted with this wonderful opportunity at a franchise that has held a very special place in my heart since the very first season of the WPL," the elated batter concluded.
