Jammu & Kashmir Wins First Ranji Trophy Title in Historic Final

Jammu & Kashmir Creates History with Maiden Ranji Trophy Triumph

In a landmark moment for Indian domestic cricket, Jammu and Kashmir scripted history on Saturday by winning their first-ever Ranji Trophy title. The summit clash against Karnataka concluded in a draw, with J&K being declared champions due to a decisive and massive first-innings lead.

Decisive First Innings Performance Seals Victory

Jammu and Kashmir put themselves in a commanding position right from the start by posting a formidable total of 584 runs in their first innings. In response, Karnataka struggled against a disciplined bowling attack and were bowled out for 293 in 93.3 overs. This handed J&K a substantial 291-run lead, which ultimately proved insurmountable for the opposition.

Pacer Auqib Nabi emerged as the bowling hero, delivering a brilliant performance with figures of five wickets for just 54 runs. His spell dismantled the Karnataka batting lineup and set the foundation for his team's historic achievement.

Strategic Batting Secures the Title

Despite having the option to enforce the follow-on, Jammu and Kashmir chose a strategic approach by batting again in their second innings. This decision effectively batted Karnataka out of the contest. On the fifth and final day, J&K resumed at 186 for four, with overnight batsmen Qamran Iqbal and Sahil Lotra taking center stage.

Both batsmen played magnificent innings, scoring superb centuries that firmly turned the game in their team's favor. Iqbal remained unbeaten on 160, while Lotra stayed not out on 101, guiding J&K to 342/4 in their second innings. This stretched their overall lead to a massive 633 runs, leaving Karnataka with no realistic chance of chasing the target.

With the outcome virtually decided, the two captains agreed to shake hands, confirming Jammu and Kashmir's historic triumph.

Financial Rewards and Historical Significance

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had enhanced domestic rewards in April 2023, increasing the prize money for the Ranji Trophy. As champions, Jammu and Kashmir will receive Rs 5 crore, while runners-up Karnataka will get Rs 3 crore. Losing semi-finalists earn Rs 1 crore each.

This victory marks a significant milestone for Jammu and Kashmir, coming 67 years after they began competing in the prestigious tournament. The triumph represents not just a sporting achievement but a moment of immense pride for the region, showcasing their growing prowess in domestic cricket.

The historic win was celebrated by fans and officials alike, with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah traveling to Karnataka to witness the final moments of this remarkable achievement.
