Jain Premier League Auction Garners Rs 31 Crore, Signaling Major Shift in Community Cricket
In a groundbreaking development for community-based sports in India, the Jain Premier League (JPL) has concluded its inaugural franchise auction with a staggering combined value of Rs 31 crore. This event, held in Ahmedabad, featured twelve teams and attracted over fifty bidders, showcasing auction numbers that rival those seen in mainstream cricket leagues. The league, backed by the Jain International Trade Organisation (JITO), is rapidly evolving from a charitable initiative into a high-value corporate sports property, marking a new chapter for cricket within the Jain community and beyond.
Record-Breaking Franchise Sales and Strategic Sponsorships
The auction saw intense competition, with Mumbai Sobo Star emerging as the most expensive franchise, sold for Rs 3.70 crore. Bengaluru followed closely at Rs 3.15 crore, while the Gujarat JPL team was acquired for Rs 2.36 crore by a Surat-based businessman, as confirmed by Shweta Hundia, secretary of JITO Sports. In addition to these impressive figures, JPL has already secured Rs 5.11 crore in title trophy sponsorship, further solidifying its financial foundation. The league has received an overwhelming 6,500 applications from Jain players, a number expected to grow as exam season concludes, according to JITO Apex vice-chairman Himanshu Shah.
Corporate Transformation and Player Development Initiatives
Pruthviraj Kothari, chairman of JITO Apex, emphasized that JPL has moved away from its earlier charity model to operate as a full-fledged corporate sports entity. To manage this transition, JITO has established the JITO Sports Foundation, which will oversee league operations and talent attraction. Team owners benefit from a supportive structure, requiring only 50% of the franchise fee in the first year, with the foundation covering expenses such as coaching and travel. Non-Jain investors are permitted to hold up to a 20% stake in teams, broadening the league's appeal. Jainik Vakil, secretary of JITO Ahmedabad, noted that teams are projected to earn through brand endorsements, and owners may eventually trade their stakes at higher valuations, with 40% of surplus funds distributed to teams post-season.
International Star Power and Enhanced Production Values
To elevate the tournament's profile, JPL is actively pursuing international cricket legends as mentors and icon players. Shweta Hundia revealed that approaches are being made to stars like Jonty Rhodes, Sanath Jayasuriya, Ross Taylor, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, and Munaf Patel. Their involvement is anticipated to boost credibility, technical quality, and visibility, creating a pathway for community talent to receive mentorship and competitive training. Himanshu Shah highlighted that players will be signed on three-year contracts with fees categorized as A (Rs 1 lakh), B (Rs 60,000), and C (Rs 40,000), fostering long-term engagement.
Grand Entertainment Platform and Broadcast Plans
Positioned as a comprehensive sports entertainment platform, JPL plans to host over 40 matches across 12 cities in April and May, with playoffs and the final likely in Mumbai. The league will feature grand opening and closing ceremonies with celebrity appearances, enhancing fan experience. Matches will be streamed on the JITO YouTube channel and a popular OTT platform, utilizing multi-camera production for a professional broadcast that aims to reach a wider audience. This strategic focus on visibility and quality underscores JPL's ambition to connect the Jain community on a large scale while setting new standards in community cricket.
