Jain Community's Cricket League Auction Generates Rs 31 Crore, Mirroring Mainstream Sports Economics
The Jain International Trade Organisation (JITO) has launched a cricket league that is making significant waves in the sports business arena. The inaugural franchise auction for the JITO Premier League (JPL) concluded with a remarkable combined value of Rs 31 crore, demonstrating financial muscle comparable to established mainstream sporting events.
Competitive Auction Dynamics and Team Valuations
Held on March 24, the auction featured more than 50 bidders competing for 12 franchise teams. The event was conducted with the intensity and competitive spirit reminiscent of high-profile auctions like the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Mumbai Sobo Star emerged as the most expensive franchise, commanding a price of Rs 3.7 crore. Following closely, the Bengaluru team was secured for Rs 3.2 crore, while a Surat-based businessman acquired the Gujarat JPL franchise for Rs 2.4 crore.
Strategic Shift to Corporate Sports Model
Pruthviraj Kothari, Chairman of JITO Apex, emphasized that the league has transitioned from its previous charity-based approach to operating as a fully corporate sports property. "This year, we plan to host more than 40 matches across 12 cities during April and May. The playoffs and final are likely to be held in Mumbai," Kothari stated.
Shweta Hundia, Secretary of JITO Sports, revealed that the league has already garnered substantial interest, with 6,500 applications from players within the Jain community. Additionally, title and trophy sponsorships have raised Rs 5.1 crore, further solidifying the league's financial foundation.
Innovative Financial Structure and Player Contracts
The league introduces a progressive financial model designed to attract investment and ensure sustainability:
- Team owners are required to pay only 50% of the franchise fee in the first year.
- The JITO Sports Foundation manages coaching, travel, and other operational expenses.
- Non-Jain investors can hold up to 20% stake in a team.
- At the season's conclusion, 40% of surplus revenue will be distributed among the teams.
Himanshu Shah, Vice-Chairman of JITO Apex, detailed the player contract structure: "Players will be signed on three-year contracts with fees determined by categories: Category A (Rs 1 lakh), Category B (Rs 60,000), and Category C (Rs 40,000)."
Revenue Streams and Future Expansion Plans
Jainik Vakil, Secretary of JITO Ahmedabad, highlighted additional revenue opportunities for team owners, including brand endorsements and the potential for trading stakes at higher valuations in the future.
Looking ahead, the league aims to enhance its profile by engaging cricket veterans. Shweta Hundia confirmed that JITO is planning to approach renowned players such as Jonty Rhodes, Sanath Jayasuriya, Ross Taylor, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, and Munaf Patel to serve as mentors or icon players for each team.
This strategic move is expected to boost the league's visibility and attract broader audience engagement, positioning the JITO Premier League as a significant player in India's evolving sports landscape.
