Shreyas Iyer's Remarkable IPL Captaincy Journey: From Turbulent Beginnings to National Contender
Shreyas Iyer's first taste of IPL leadership arrived under highly turbulent circumstances. Midway through the 2018 season, during an awkward press conference flanked by head coach Ricky Ponting, Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) stalwart Gautam Gambhir announced his decision to step down as captain. This move came due to woeful personal form and the team's embarrassing performance throughout the season.
In a surprising turn, Gambhir named the young Shreyas Iyer as his immediate successor. This marked the beginning of what would become a transformative journey for Iyer as both a captain and a batter under Ponting's mentorship at Delhi Capitals.
From Delhi Capitals to Kolkata Knight Riders: A Championship Path
Iyer flourished in his leadership role at Delhi Capitals, developing his game and captaincy skills significantly. However, in 2022, the franchise shifted leadership to Rishabh Pant, prompting Iyer's move to Kolkata Knight Riders. This transition proved fortuitous when Iyer reunited with Gautam Gambhir at KKR in 2024 and guided the franchise to an IPL championship title.
The triumph had immediate ripple effects. Within a month of the victory, Gambhir graduated to become India's head coach, while Iyer departed the franchise. Despite Gambhir's rapid move to reshape India's T20I setup, Iyer found himself out of national contention, highlighting the persistent turbulence that has followed his otherwise consistent career.
Reuniting with Ponting at Punjab Kings: A New Campaign
Now reunited with Ricky Ponting at Punjab Kings—both nursing scars from their Capitals exit—Iyer is stirring a campaign that could potentially knock on the door of Gambhir's champion T20 unit. The partnership has reignited discussions about Iyer's future in the national setup.
This Sunday evening, Iyer will face his former teammate Rishabh Pant, who now leads Lucknow Super Giants while fighting an uphill battle to reclaim his India spot after being sidelined following the triumphant 2024 T20 World Cup campaign. However, Iyer's race is no longer against Pant alone.
The Suryakumar Yadav Conundrum and Iyer's Opportunity
World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav's prolonged slump has triggered one of the trickiest phases for Gambhir and the national selection committee. Sources indicate that Shreyas Iyer has emerged as the most obvious replacement for Suryakumar if and when selectors decide to make a change.
His authority at the crucial No. 4 position in T20 cricket remains unmatched in Indian cricket at present. The selectors have shown little leniency with Pant and Shubman Gill in the format, but conviction around Suryakumar's successor—particularly as captain—remains a key consideration.
"Iyer last played a T20I in 2023. He has not been part of the current setup. It's a big call to bring him back and hand him the captaincy straightaway," a BCCI source revealed. "The focus has shifted towards the 2027 ODI World Cup, which has given selectors breathing space to plan for a T20I leadership transition."
The Sarpanch of Punjab Kings: Leadership Evolution
At Punjab Kings, Iyer has been branded the "sarpanch"—a testament to his growing leadership stature. His swagger and carefree demeanor fit perfectly with the team's aura, stemming from remarkable self-awareness. Bowling coach James Hopes, a Ponting mainstay since their Capitals days, has witnessed Iyer's evolution firsthand.
"He's very aware of what his perceived weaknesses were over the years. He's come into this season having really nailed them," Hopes stated. "When he got hurt in Australia last October, he was starting to nail them in international cricket as well. Once he finds his way back into the Indian team, you'll see the batter he's going to be for the rest of his career. Captaincy improves his batting."
The Ponting Connection: From Mentorship to Partnership
Iyer has always operated in a comfort zone around Ricky Ponting. As a captain, there's no need for handholding anymore. "He was very young when he was captaining Delhi. He's very well planned, but still follows his gut," Hopes explained.
"Ricky and Shreyas work well together. When we get into our meetings, he's the captain. He steps up and he's got his own ideas, he's willing to listen," he added, highlighting the mature partnership that has developed between the two.
With Iyer already serving as vice-captain of the ODI team, the question now revolves around how the Indian team management and selectors will find a place for him in the T20 setup. His journey from that turbulent 2018 press conference to potentially leading India's T20 team represents one of the most compelling narratives in contemporary Indian cricket.
