Ireland Create History with First T20I Win Over India
Ireland Beat India in First T20I for Historic Win

Ireland created history on Friday by defeating India for the first time in a T20 International, winning the opening match of the three-game series by five wickets at The Village in Dublin. Chasing 140, Ireland reached the target with four balls to spare, riding on a composed 72 not out from Andrew Balbirnie.

India's Batting Collapse

India, electing to bat first, managed only 139 for 8 in their 20 overs. The visitors' batting lineup struggled against disciplined Irish bowling, with only Suryakumar Yadav (34 off 26) and Sanju Samson (26 off 20) offering some resistance. The rest of the batters failed to convert starts, as wickets fell at regular intervals. Josh Little was the pick of the bowlers for Ireland, taking 3 for 24 in his four overs.

Ireland's Chase Led by Balbirnie

In reply, Ireland lost opener Paul Stirling early for 12, but Balbirnie anchored the innings with a 55-ball 72, hitting nine fours and two sixes. He found support from Harry Tector (24) and Curtis Campher (18). Despite a late wobble that saw two wickets fall in quick succession, Balbirnie held his nerve to take Ireland home with a boundary off Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the final over.

Historic Moment for Irish Cricket

This was Ireland's first win over India in any format of cricket. "It's a special day for Irish cricket. The boys executed the plan perfectly. We knew we had to be disciplined with the ball and then bat smartly. Andy played a captain's knock," said Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie after the match. India captain Hardik Pandya acknowledged the defeat, stating, "We were 20-30 runs short. Ireland bowled well and deserved this win."

Series Context

The win gives Ireland a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series. The second match is scheduled for Sunday, June 28, at the same venue. India, led by Hardik Pandya in the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma, will look to bounce back and level the series.
